Francis Bacon: A Terrible Beauty celebrates the centenary of Francis Bacon's birth in 63, Lower Baggot Street, Dublin. This exhibition comprising paintings, drawings, photographs, unfinished works and slashed canvases will offer the viewer an astonishing new look at Francis Bacon, the great figurative painter of the 20th century. It will provide an opportunity to reappraise his oeuvre through the selected paintings, several of which haven’t been on public exhibition for many years. The mastery of Francis Bacon is revealed through these works and will be fully supported by an extensive and previously unseen selection of items from Bacon’s Studio. Following on the donation of the Studio to the Hugh Lane by John Edwards in 1998, the 7,000 plus items retrieved from the studio were archived by The Hugh Lane. Francis Bacon’s Studio has been on permanent exhibition at Dublin City Gallery The Hugh Lane since 2001. It is acknowledged as one of the most pioneering and successful realisations of preserving and displaying an artist’s studio and contents. The database is unprecedented, documenting every item retrieved, thus providing fascinating insights into Bacon’s working processes. The exhibition is co-curated by Barbara Dawson and Martin Harrison. It will be accompanied by a richly illustrated catalogue that will present important new research on the artist. Francis Bacon: A Terrible Beauty is one of the major European cultural events of 2009. The exhibition will tour to Compton Verney, Warwickshire, England, in 2010. Wexford. It was through work in photography and audio recordings that it became apparent to the artist that these communities live in isolation, which is partly self imposed but also in response to how they are perceived from the settled communities. Conor O'Leary is currently based in London, where he will be studying for a MA in photojournalism at the University of Westminster, London in 2010. He graduated with a BA (Hons) in Photojournalism, Swansea Metropolitan University in 2009.

Róisin Lewis exhibits work from an ongoing project Lesser Trefoils, inspired by the research of Nathaniel Colgan. In 1893 the Irish botanist asked people from all over Ireland to send him “genuine Shamrock” and he identified those samples that were sent to him. His results included Lesser trefoil plants, White clover, Red Clover, Black Medick and Wood Sorrel. Lewis is engaged in an ongoing process, gathering trifoliate seedlings as she travels and documenting their growth over months, as they become mature “Shamrocks”. The arrangement of leaves in the Sycamore series, is inspired by fragments of antique lace and printed textiles. Leaves gathered along the R497 are used to construct a landscape.

The Butler Gallery is delighted to present a multi-media exhibition by Aideen Barry. The Morphology of the Other addresses a sense of fear of impending futuristic doom. The exhibition evokes the threat of what we humans might eventually morph into - creatures devoid of compassion and empathy. Barry’s inherent rebellion is targeted against the society in which we live, challenging our progress and lack of, and encouraging responsibility towards a ‘new world’ attitude. Barry’s philosophical interests lie with “the uncanny”. She frequently plays with the notion of the subverted female character in her film and performative works, referring to hysterical female creatures in Irish Gothic literature. This interest in the Gothic is a constant in Barry’s work, combining nightmare with humour, having the effect of equally enticing and repelling the viewer. Lourdes Viso and Róisín Russell are delighted to present an exhibition of works by international Brazilian artist Beth Moysés, whose work has never before been exhibited in Ireland. Her video piece Gotejando (Dripping) and photographs from the performance Mosaico branco por 60 mulheres (White mosaic by 60 women) will be on show at the Sycamore in Dublin. Moysés has exhibited widely across the Americas, in Spain and China; recently this includes Veiled Recollections a performance at the International Day of Non Violence Against Women, Shanghai, China (2008), And Pass, a performance at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain (2008), Lecho Rojo, a performance at the ARCO Art Fair 2008 in Madrid, Spain with the Galeria Fernando Pradilla and Between-Reds at the Galeria Adora Calvo in Salamanca, Spain (2007). Her work features in numerous collections, including those of the Museo de Bellas Artes de Santander, Spain, the Instituto Valenciano de Arte Moderno, Valencia, Spain, the 21C Museum, Kentucky, USA, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía Madrid, Spain and the Museu de Arte Contemporânea, São Paulo, Brazil. In 1996 she was awarded an Acquisition Prize from UNAMA in Belém, Brazil.

Nano Reid and Gerard Dillon is the first exhibition to examine the influences, affinities and contrasts between the output of these two major Irish artists. Featuring works from public and private collections throughout Ireland, including many seldom seen in public, the exhibition includes Dillon’s enchanting portrait of Reid, Nano’s Dream Castle (Collection, National Gallery of Ireland), and paintings by both artists created during the periods that they spent together in Drogheda and Connemara. While the reputations of Reid and Dillon have grown in recent years, there has been little in-depth research into their work and no exploration of their how their relationship influenced their art. By exploring their shared interest in Celtic art and mythology, Drogheda and the Boyne, the landscape and inhabitants of the west of Ireland and urban scenes of everyday life, as well as their forays into illustration and their artistic experiments influenced by international Modernism, this exhibition revaluates the oeuvres of these two important artists and reveals how their shared influences, inspirations and experiences helped to change their art and, ultimately, the shape of Irish art history.

Tondo is an artist's collective whose members include Gerard Cox, Lioubov Kadyrova, Eoin Mac Lochlainn and Eve Parnell. Following on from Spatial Notions (2005) and eyed (2007), Dermot Seymour continues to delve into his fascination with gazes, whether they are emanating from animals or the pages of newspapers and magazines. It’s said that Seymour paints humans and animals in a realist style, but perhaps that’s being too picky. The faces – scrubbed raw by the artist’s brush; metamorphosised in a mutated wide angle – are not by and large conferred status by virtue of their species. Over the past eighteen months Walters has been developing a project entitled PLACE situated in Gorey, Co. Wexford; taking on a disused shop to create an intimate gallery/studio integrating a functioning shop. This came about through a need to find a new model to both live and sustain herself as an artist. For her solo show, Walters is transporting the entire shop from Gorey to Wexford Arts Centre. The installation will be a fully interactive and operational space while in parallel the vacated shop space in Gorey will become a working studio, alongside a live video feed of the relocated shop in Wexford. This action, while questioning the current economic climate and pressure ensued on the arts by commerical demands, forcibly and directly melds together two worlds which traditionally and in their purist forms are held at arms length, that of art and fashion, art and commerce. 'POOL’ is an exhibition of works by two artists, whose work manifests in very different forms but who nevertheless share similar sources of reference and inspiration. A survey exhibition of sculpture by Gibbons from the last 20 years. Large early works in rusted and painted steel up to contemporary portraits in stainless steel as featured in his current exhibition at London's National Portrait Gallery. Born in County Clare in 1949, Gibbons has been based in London for over 30 years. This exhibition is a remarkable departure for Mick O’Dea and yet it is also a journey all the way back to his childhood home in Ennis, where, as a boy he played toy soldiers in the family bar in the unlikely shared company of ex-British service men who had fought in WW2 and Old IRA veterans. For the old men who had fought in real zones of combat, the boy’s plastic tanks and guns became tangible examples of what equipment had worked or hindered their own intricately remembered army manoeuvres. Forty years later, the artist recalled: “In my father's pub the ex-British army men were rank and file rather than commanders, though when it came to giving me advice about how to lay out my plastic solders they took on the role of commanders.”[i] For Mick O’Dea, the childhood military toys would inform two decades of his visual art practice. It is difficult to believe that this is the first solo exhibition in Dublin by this hugely acclaimed Welsh painter. Shani Rhys James is an artist whose quality as a painter outshines all that is fashionable and transient in contemporary art. Born in 1953 in Melbourne, Australia, she has since childhood lived in Wales and is undoubtedly the most exciting and critically acclaimed Welsh painter of her generation. A Jerwood Prize (UK's most prestigious prize for painting) winner in 2003, she has also won the Hunting Prize, National Portrait Award, Mostyn Open, the Gold Medal at the National Eisteddfod and was made an MBE in 2006. In 2007 she received The Glyndwr Award, presented by MOMA for her outstanding contribution to Welsh Art. A hardback publication will accompany the exhibition.
