This is an oil sketch for the well-known larger composition which sold in recent years (Sotheby’s, London, 18 May 2000, lot 173). Painted in 1941, the larger work is believed to have been exhibited at the RHA the following year under the title, Reflections in a Dublin Restaurant (catalogue no. 19, £75-0-0), and to have later toured North America and Canada as part of the exhibition, ‘Contemporary Irish Art’, 1950 (catalogue no. 49). In 1976 it was included in the Kernoff retrospective held at the Hugh Lane Gallery (catalogue no. 48, on loan from a private collection). Two watercolours of the same subject were also painted in 1941, one of which is illustrated in Kenneth McConkey’s, A Free Spirit (op. cit., page 173); the second appeared recently at auction (Sotheby’s, London, 16 May 2002, lot 191). The present example remained in Kernoff’s possession for the duration of his life and was not exhibited until four months after his death, when it appeared as part of a special memorial section to the artist at the 1975 annual RHA exhibition. In all four works the façade of Davy Byrne’s public house is viewed through the front window of the Bailey, a restaurant and bar on Duke Street, Dublin. Kernoff was a habitué of both establishments and painted several interiors of Davy Byrne’s, including the well-known triple portrait of himself in the back snug with the proprietor and Martin Murphy, set-maker for the Gate Theatre. In the Bailey restaurant series, Kernoff likewise includes a portrait of himself: the figure in the trilby hat and glasses, reflected in the bar mirror. In the present example Kernoff is partially hidden behind the newspaper he is reading. Both the larger oil and the two watercolours differ from the present work in a few other minor details: a second play-bill hangs from a hook to the left of the window (advertising the Gate Theatre’s production of Romeo and Juliet in two works, and an Abbey production of The Plough and the Stars in another), an extra figure is reflected in the bar mirror to the furthermost right of the composition, the potted plant in the first-floor window of Davy Byrne’s has moved, the woman passing outside has donned a different hat and walks in the opposite direction. In essence however, the four compositions remain the same, each painting a detailed and lively picture of Dublin’s literary pub life.

The firm of P. & H. Egan, brewers, malsters, wine and spirit bonders and general merchants, was established in 1852. They were one of the largest companies in the Irish midlands, employing between 200-250 workers at any given time, and with premises on Bridge Street (seen here), Church Street and the Market Square in Tullamore. As well as running a general provisions store and ironmongery, they brewed and bottled their own porter, and distributed ale and malt whiskey. When Kernoff first exhibited this work it appeared under the title P. & H. Egan Ltd. before 1910, Tullamore. The title is slightly unusual in that Kernoff did not habitually work from photographs and can not be expected to have any firm memory of the town as it appeared in 1910. However, given that Kernoff did not exhibit the work until 1951, it seems plausible that the title ought to have read “before 1940” (the year in which it was painted) rather than “before 1910”.

Ranked by the Studio magazine as “one of the most brilliant” of Orpen’s protégés, Margaret Clarke was a leading portrait artist of the Edwardian era, becoming in 1927 one of the first women to be granted full membership of the RHA. Born Margaret Crilley, in Newry, Co. Down, she first studied art at the local technical school, where she won a scholarship. In 1905 she came to Dublin to further her studies at the Metropolitan School of Art, there coming under Orpen’s tutelage. She worked as both studio assistant and model for Orpen. At the Metropolitan School she was awarded many prizes including a teacher training scholarship. In 1914 she visited the Aran Islands with her future husband, the stained glass artist and illustrator Harry Clarke. After her husband’s death in 1931 she took on the work of running his stained glass studio, concurrent with maintaining her own painting career. Their son David, also an artist, later joined the business. In 1932 the Haverty Trust commissioned her to paint St Patrick for the Mansion House, Dublin. Other commissions included portraits of Eamon de Valera, Lennox Robinson and Archbishop McQuaid. She held a solo exhibition at the Dublin Painters Gallery in 1939, and four years later helped establish the first Irish Living Art Exhibition. Her work is represented in all major public collections in Ireland. The present work is believed to be a portrait of Master Noel Thompson, exhibited at the RHA in 1919 (catalogue no. 4). In treatment it is wholly redolent of Orpen, from the carefully observed play of light across the child’s ruffled shirt, to the chinoiserie patterned silk shawl used as a backdrop – an item so elegant as to have possibly come from Orpen’s box of studio props.

Lavery painted portraits of Griffith and Collins in 1921 whilst they were in London negotiating the terms of the Irish Treaty. Within months of their portraits being painted, both men were dead - Griffith of a heart attack, Collins assassinated only weeks later. The present pair of lithographs is based on the oil portraits, one of which is now in the collection of the Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery of Modern Art, Dublin. The portrait of Collins was said to have been given to Kitty Kiernan and has since been lost. Printed by Wilson Hartnell & Co. Publishers, Dublin.

Accompanying this lot is a letter from Dr S. B. Kennedy, Belfast, April 2005, concerning O’Rorke Dickey’s probable authorship of the painting, and dating it to the early 1920s. Dickey is known to have often painted views of towns from an elevated position, such as that afforded by the old city walls of Derry in this work. In the foreground is Walker’s Pillar, an eighty foot high Doric column erected in 1826 as a memorial to George Walker (1618-1690), Irish Anglican clergyman and commander. Walker served as joint governor of Londonderry (now Derry) during the 1689 siege by the army of the deposed James II. Under Walker's leadership, the townsfolk held the city for 105 days until help arrived. Walker received the thanks of Parliament and was designated Bishop of Derry. The pillar was destroyed by a bomb blast in the early 1970s.

Faulkner collaborated with the animal painter John MacPherson on at least one other occasion, exhibiting a view of Lough Derrydan, Connemara at the Cork Industrial Exhibition in 1883. The present view is looking towards Caislean-na-Circe, formerly a stronghold of the Joyce clan and known as ‘Cock’s Castle’, until the so-called pirate queen Grace O’Malley attacked and defeated the clan in the late sixteenth century, after which the fortress was re-named ‘Hen’s Castle’.

Inscribed on the reverse: “Lent to D. Figgis by E. M. Weddall 15 . (?) 4 . 1918”. A scene on Achill Island, the setting is almost certainly the old village of Dugort. The original owner of this work, Mrs Emily M. Weddall, was the widow of a sea captain and a friend of the artist. Of her, Henry commented: “She introduced me to the people and initiated me into many of the ways peculiar to the island.…She was [he continued] enthusiastic about my work and my desire to live in Achill and paint, and between us I think we were largely responsible for putting Achill ‘on the map’, as it is called” (Henry, An Irish Portrait, 1951, p. 53). D. Figgis, to whom Mrs Weddall lent the picture, was Darrell Figgis, a politician and man of letters, who lived on Achill for several years. He was deeply involved in the Irish nationalist movement in the years before and after the Easter Rising of 1916. Despite the title, the source of which is unrecorded, Twilight Houses was probably painted in the early morning, for Henry often worked around dawn, when all was still and the light cool and soft. This practice influenced his choice of muted colours and restricted his range of tones, characteristics which are clearly evident here. It was a development which had its beginnings around 1916-17, a time when the artist was turning his attention away from the life of the islanders of Achill towards the landscape itself. It also shows the influence of Whistler which re-surfaced in his work at the time. Twilight Houses is numbered 1072 in S. B. Kennedy’s forthcoming catalogue raisonné of Paul Henry’s oeuvre. Dr S. B. Kennedy, Belfast, January 2005

Born in Belfast MacCana worked initially as a linen and damask designer, before his involvement with the IRA saw him arrested in Co. Cavan in 1921. After serving seven months in prison he was released under the general amnesty, and enrolled at the Belfast College of Art. There he won the Dunville Scholarship, allowing him a further three years study in London at the Royal College of Art. On returning to Ireland he taught for a year in Belfast before being appointed art master at Galway Technical School, 1929-35. From 1935-37 he was an art inspector for the Department of Education in Dublin, before heading to Cork, where he served as principal of the Crawford College of Art, 1937-1967. Shy of publicity, MacCana exhibited only occasionally with the RHA, the Belfast Arts Society and the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers. His work hangs in the Crawford Gallery and University College Cork (see Snoddy, pages 363-364).

Irish-American artist David O’Doherty was born and educated in Dublin. He held his first solo exhibition in June 1956 at the Little Theatre, Brown Thomas, and in the same year began exhibiting at the Irish Living Art Exhibitions. After five years in Paris in the late 1950s he returned to Dublin and began showing with the Ritchie Hendriks Gallery and the Independent Artists Group. A joint show with Brian Bourke, John Kelly and Michael Kane at Hendriks in 1963 was a critical success. In the mid-sixties he moved to London and thence to North America, where he still lives. Further exhibitions have been held in the Fustemburg Gallery, Paris, and the Kennedy Gallery, Washington DC. He is represented in the collection of the Crawford Gallery, Cork.

The individual subjects of the window are as follows: St. Patrick With St. Brigid At His Feet; The Virgin Mary Trampling The Snake Above Ste. Catherine Labouré And Her Miraculous Medal; Christ With The Sacred Heart And Ste. Marguerite-Marie Alacoque Kneeling At His Feet; St. Vincent De Paul With A Charitable Vincentian Nun At His Feet Patrick Pollen, son of a sculptor whose uncle was J. Hungerford Pollen, the well-known Pre-Raphaelite painter and designer of Dublin’s University Church, was trained at the Slade School in London and, in 1951, in Paris at the Académie Julian. Such was the effect of Evie Hone’s great nine-light Eton College Chapel Crucifixion and Last Supper window (completed 1952) on him that Pollen resolved to go to Dublin to learn the art of stained glass with her. Since 1944, on the dissolution of An Túr Gloine cooperative in Dublin’s Upper Pembroke Street, Hone had been working prolifically but in increasingly poor health on her greatest masterpieces in stained glass from her small studio beside Marlay Grange, Rathfarnham. On her advice, in January 1953, Pollen rented a small area off the large studio from Catherine O’Brien, the An Túr artist who had bought up the studio and its contents, much of which were destroyed by fire in 1958. He worked from there aided by the studio glazier, Peter Connolly, until O’Brien’s death in 1963, sometimes taking on commissions Hone could not take on, cherishing the use of her brushes which she bequeathed to him on her death in 1955. Hone’s profound influence on Pollen, apparent in this early work by him, is seen in the superb quality of the deep, thick pieces of glowing ruby, blue, amber and green glass selected to capture the passing light, the bold, expressive painting with thick brushstrokes and loose washes to enhance the rich colours and ensure clear, graphic legibility from a considerable height, and the gentle compassion with which each figure is depicted. Each of the figures, which were given to the artist by the Irish Vincentian fathers in Sheffield, is identifiable by distinctive attributes: St. Patrick by his crossed-snake mitre, torc, green alb and shamrock; St. Brigid by her Cross and Abbey; Ste. Catherine Labouré, the devout 19th century French Vincentian nun who beheld a vision of the Virgin Mary poised on a globe on which a serpent was prostrated, and was bidden to have a medal struck with this living picture; kneeling Ste. Marguerite-Marie Alacoque, the aristocratic 17th century Burgundian nun of the Order of the Visitation, whose visionary and penitential devotion to the Sacred Heart led to its subsequent official adoption; St. Vincent de Paul, the 17th century charitable reformer of hospitals, galley slave conditions, nursing and parochial missions and founder of the Vincentians holds a crucifix and looks down on a saintly blue-clad Vincentian nun who cradles a baby in one of the foundling hospitals he systematized. Dr Nicola Gordon Bowe Dublin Whyte’s wish to thank the artist Patrick Pollen, Dr Nicola Gordon Bowe, Ken Ryan of Abbey Stained Glass, Mrs Muriel Hone and the late Oliver Hone for their concerted help in the cataloguing of this work.
