James Warwick OBE (1909-1990) was former principal of the Belfast College of Art. He studied there as a young man before winning a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London, where he specialised in silverwork. In the 1930s he worked in London as a designer for the firm of Mappin and Webb. He designed and made the ceremonial mace at Queen’s University, Belfast. After succeeding Ivor Beaumont as head of the College of Art, he implemented a new curriculum with a strong emphasis on craft. He served on the Art Advisory Committee of the Council for the Encouragement of Music and Art (CEMA), which later became the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. He also served on the board of the Arts Council of Ireland / An Chomhairle Ealaíon and was first chairman of the British Crafts Council. In 1973 he was appointed a consultant director of the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. He was also a trustee of the Ulster Museum. When the University of Ulster was founded in 1984, Warwick was appointed its first Dean of the Faculty of Arts. He was awarded an OBE for his contribution to art education in Northern Ireland in 1972. Blackshaw knew Warwick from the College of Art and commissioned a number of portraits from him. In 1958 Blackshaw exhibited a group portrait of James Warwick’s three sons at the RUA. The present work dates to the early 1960s.

Second Version of Triptych, 1988 revisits the theme and subject of Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, 1944, a work which established Bacon as a leading artist of the post-war period. Both triptychs are in the collection of the Tate Gallery, London. In the later version Bacon more than doubled the size of the composition whilst reducing the relative size of the figures, producing the effect of their having been plunged into a blood-red void. The lithographs were produced the following year in 1989.

Born and educated in Leeds, Trevor Bell moved to Cornwall whilst in his twenties and soon established himself as a leading member of the St Ives school. His first solo exhibition was held at the Waddington Galleries in London in 1958 and sold out before the opening night. Patrick Heron declared him to be “the best non-figurative painter under thirty in Britain”. Immediately afterwards he was awarded the Paris Biennale International Painting Prize and an Italian Government Scholarship. In 1970 he was accorded a retrospective exhibition which toured England, Scotland and Ireland. Three years later the Whitechapel Gallery in London gave him a major one-man show. In the mid-1970s Bell moved to the United States to take up a post as professor of painting at Florida State University. Important exhibitions were held at the Corcoran Gallery and the Academy of Sciences in Washington DC, and the Museum of Art in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, among others. He was included in the London Tate Gallery’s St. Ives 1939 to 1964 exhibition and, since his return to live in Cornwall in 1996, has been given a major retrospective at the Tate Gallery, St Ives.

Accompanied by an original pen and ink sketch of the painting and a signed manuscript letter from the artist. King and Queen was painted as a tribute to the artist’s brief but significant friendship with the present owner. The two met in 1969 at a Belfast clinic where the present owner was then working and where O’Neill was undergoing treatment for alcoholism. In a written account of their meeting, the owner recalled that O’Neill was “quietly spoken and unassuming in his manner; we managed to build up a good rapport quite readily and he was able to converse freely with me”. They discussed O’Neill’s early years and frequently spoke of painting. O’Neill amused her with anecdotes about his career, such as his mother’s reaction to an early painting of a nude – “Oh Dan, cover her up” – to which request he complied; the resulting work, The Blue Skirt is now in the Ulster Museum. As their friendship grew O’Neill presented a number of impromptu gifts, including a William Conor sketch and two landscape paintings of his own. He asked his new confidante to sit for a portrait, to which she agreed. During one of the portrait sittings, she was accompanied by her then nine year old son. O’Neill encouraged the young boy to do some painting of his own, and promised that one day he would paint a clown for him. Some months later O’Neill telephoned to say he was unable to complete the portrait, and had instead transformed the work into a clown; this too he presented as a gift. In a series of letters to the owner, O’Neill gave news of his progress in the studio, telling her he had been “painting mostly at nights when everything is still and quiet”. An old transistor radio kept him company and he painted to the music of Brahms, Debussy, Mozart, Schubert and Sibelius. Most significantly he credited his return to painting to their friendship. “You without knowing it have given me the most priceless gift possible for any one person to give and this I have recently realised myself – that is the will to paint”. King and Queen was the fourth and final gift. The owner recalls the occasion on which it was presented to her: ”… Dan phoned to ask if I would mind meeting him for coffee in town as he had a painting which he would like to discuss with me. I met up with him in the agreed café. He had a large picture with him, he referred to it as the King and Queen. The painting he said was for me if I would like it, otherwise he would destroy it as it was far too personal for him and he did not want to sell it”. In the course of their conversation O’Neill made a sketch of the composition (included with lot). The gift was accepted but the two were to never see each other again, for shortly thereafter Dan O’Neill died. King and Queen has remained in the same ownership since 1974 and has never before been exhibited in public.

This rare early work was executed at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art in the enamelling class, which was run by Oswald Reeves (1870-1967). It was awarded a silver medal at the Board of Education's National Competition in the enamelling section for 1912. In the same year Reeves’ pupils at the School of Art attracted highly favourable press when their work was exhibited in Dresden. Reeves’ influence is evident not merely in terms of technique, but also in the use of Celtic imagery. Reeves’ own work tended towards fairy themes and Celtic mythology (see for instance his cover for The Plunkett Album, 1908, illustrated in Paul Larmour, The Arts and Crafts Movement in Ireland, 1994, page 174. In 1913 he designed and executed an enamel and silver pendant depicting a woman holding a crystal orb symbolising the source of inspiration (ill. Larmour, page 173). Hamilton’s work employs the device of a halo of birds to similarly represent inspiration delivered by an oracular Celtic goddess to a supplicant figure, whose hammer, tucked into his belt, indicates him to be a sculptor. This piece is one of three in the possession of the present owner, which featured on BBC TV’s Antiques Roadshow on 27 January 2008.

Painted in the same year as two of Moynan’s best known works, Military Manoeuvres and Tug of War, this portrait of the artist’s young daughter displays a more intimate aspect of the artist’s oeuvre. As Maebh O’Regan has noted, Moynan was “a dedicated family man” who frequently used his family as models.1 Contemplation, 1892 shows Moynan’s wife, Suzanna, with their daughter Bridget; his wife’s gaze suggesting “a moment of realisation during the rough and tumble of play”, providing “an insight into the informal interaction between parent and child within the artist’s household”. 2 When the present work first surfaced at auction, in 1992, it was singled out for praise by art critic Niall Fallon: “Of all the works in the sale, none is more captivating than Richard Thomas Moynan’s portrait of his little daughter, Bridget. Moynan drew and painted her quite frequently, and this is a minor classic, beautifully composed and given an extra, strange dimension by the addition of a discarded doll lying at the girl’s feet”. 1 Maebh O’Regan, ‘Richard Moynan: Painting Privilege and Poverty’, Irish Arts Review, vol. 23 no. 4, December 2006, page 117 2 Ibid.
