A wonderful series of tongue-in-cheek letters from William Orpen to George Fletcher, who was Assistant Secretary and Head of Technical Instruction in Ireland. Fletcher devoted twenty-five years to the furtherance of Irish education and received an honorary degree from TCD in recognition of his work. He was a member of the Royal Irish Academy and a Council Member of the RDS. He had extensive interaction with Orpen due to their mutual involvement with the Metropolitan School of Art, which was under Fletcher’s remit within the Department of Agriculture and Technical Instruction. Fletcher’s personality was light hearted and fun loving and he felt thoroughly at home with the wit and repartee that was part of Dublin life of this era. The letters make reference to staffing matters and to Orpen’s studio at the Metropolitan School. One, dated 31 November 1909, refers to his difficulty in obtaining some “real good models sent over from London” for the school’s life-class, but concludes with news of his own success in London and is illustrated in pencil with a jubilant self-portrait, showering piles of coins from either hand. Another letter, dated 16 February 1917, refers to his posting as official war artist and is illustrated with a sketch of himself at work on the Front (see illustration).

One of Orpen’s most distinguished protegés, Patrick Tuohy emigrated to north America in 1927 and died only three years later, cutting short a promising career. In all, about 200 works of his have been catalogued, consisting of drawings, watercolours and oil paintings. The letter, dated 28 June 1927, is written from South Carolina and extensively relates Tuohy’s observations on the USA: “parties, fish fries and barbecues” and notes “the number of intelligent good looking girls. I would back them against the best in Europe”. Tuohy’s correspondent, William Sinclair, was one of two twin brothers who had an antiques business at 47 Nassau Street. An eccentric and colourful character, variously nick-named “Boss” or the “Beard” or “Sink”, Sinclair’s temperament was artistic rather than commercial and consequently as a dealer he was a failure but according to Sir William Orpen “as a friend he was a glorious success”. He married Cissie Beckett (aunt of playwright Sam).

Born into a wealthy Dublin merchant family, Shee disappointed them by becoming a painter. However, he soon rose to the top of his profession in London. He had been introduced to Joshua Reynolds, who had advised him to study in the school of the Royal Academy. He became an associate there in 1798. In 1830 he was elected President of the Royal Academy and shortly afterwards was knighted. He also published poems, two novels and a play. Both letters, written from Cavendish Square (31 December 1813 and 2 July 1840), are to Sir Richard Westmacott (1775-1856), sculptor and fellow member of the RA. The first invites Westmacott to “a friendly and homely dinner”, whilst the second written apologises for being unable to keep an appointment “… as I am summoned to a meeting of the Trustees of the National Gallery”.
