This view of the beautiful tiny clachan of Portbrtadden Co. Antrim dates from the early 1960s. A precipitous road leads down to the fishermen's cottage where the salmon nets dry at the edge of Whitepark Bay. Sellar was a teacher in the nearby school and would have known this coast well. The cottage in this scene is now the property of the National Trust. Robert Sellar was born in Scotland. He moved to Northern Ireland as a child and studied at Belfast College of Art. He taught in schools in Derry and Antrim, and for many years was adviser in art education to the North-Eastern Education Board before retiring in 1984. He was commissioned to produce designs for the stained glass windows at Castlerock Presbyterian Church in Northern Ireland and also created designs for postage stamps and commemorative postmarks for both the Irish and British postal services.

This charming small painting depicts a view of Slieve Martin from Omeath, with complex layering of the paint giving depth and character. The artist wrote of this work: “the painting was one of a series done in 1965 when I turned my attention to landscape, trying to convey the texture, stratification and erosion of an area I had [previously] lived in called the Isle of Purbeck, near Swanage, Dorset. I then turned my attention to my local area – mainly the Mournes and the Antrim coast… [This] is one of the Mourne ones – exhibited first in the Bell Gallery, Alfred Street”.

Dickey lived in Antrim for a short while after World War I and painted landscapes there and in Counties Down and Donegal. At the time he was one of only a tiny minority of artists working in Northern Ireland who might be considered part of the wider European avant-garde. The present landscape, from this post-war period, depicts the Mourne Mountains in the distance.

This depcition of the main yard at Harland and Wolff Shipyard in Belfast is notable given the rarity of paintings of industrial architecture. It depicts the Arrol Gantry built by Sir William Arrol, who also designed the Forth and Tay rail bridges. This was commissioned specially for the building of the ships RMS Titanic, RMS Olympic and RMS Britannic. The gantry was known colloquially as ‘Birdcage walk’ by the shipyard workers who operated the gantry cranes and the smaller cranes, which they called ‘wall creepers’. Phillip Williamson was born in Moy, Co. Tyrone, and studied art at Methodist College Belfast before serving in the merchant navy. He has exhibited regularly at the RUA with mainly marine subjects.

This mural study almost certainly relates to Luke’s little-known contribution to the Northern Ireland Government’s pavilion at the Glasgow Empire Exhibition in 1938. The commission consisted of fifteen panels depicting industry and labour in Northern Ireland, forming a frieze 45.7m in total length. John Luke and Poppy Mollan supplied the outline drawings, which were then incised in wood by the Belfast sculptor Morris Harding RHA PRUA (1874-1964). Luke later completed three other murals, also on the theme of industry, for Belfast City Hall, the Provincial Masonic Hall in Belfast, and Millfield Technical College.

One of the earliest extant works by Luke, this portrait study was painted just three years after he first enrolled in night classes at Belfast Technical College. Luke’s early works are characterised by clean washes of colour with sound under-drawing (see for example his watercolour, Mossvale, 1926, illustrated in John Hewitt’s monograph, page 5). In the present work we see the artist’s mother, Sarah Luke (1877-1953), dramatically lit from below possibly by a lamp placed near her feet. Sarah was the daughter of a weaver from the Ballymena district. In 1927, the year after this work was painted, Luke won the Dunville Art Scholarship, which enabled him to go to the Slade in London; after this his drawing grew ever clearer and more concise.

Samuel Fenton exhibited frequently at the Royal Academy between 1943 and 1980 and was the winner of the Singer and Friedlander Prize in 1989. Although born in London he moved to Brighton in 1948. He was almost entirely self taught and began his career painting traditional landscapes but his subject matter gradually transformed into the fantastic and surreal compositions for which he is best known. In relation to this painting he notes the bric-a-brac which populates the painting: "Balinese figures from antique shop in Lewes. Tree trunk from tree blown over in hurricane. Camel and goat from London Zoo. Towers contrived.

This loose flowing painting embodies a description of the artist's philosophy. He wrote how his early influences were his artistic and quite notable family and in particular his mother. She would ask "how dare you be so conceited as to try and imitate nature in colour and shape" and encouraged him rather to "interpret nature", as he has done here. This painting shows a confidence with paint which conveys the scene better than any precise realist approach. An accomplished work, it shows what he was capable of when freed from commercial constraints. The delicacy of touch and pastel colours fill the scene with a spring-like quality or airiness and light. R. O. Dunlop's father was a great friend of both AE (George Russell) and W. B. Yeats, and was involved with both of them in creating the magazine The Irish Theosophist, which was printed in the artist's grandfather's house. James Stephens was another frequent visitor and the family were at the centre of the Irish literary revival.

His work as illustrator to Pole to Pole (by Pamela Freeman, 2001) was shortlisted for the Children's Book Council of Australia's Book of the Year award. When in receipt of a bursary from the Tyrone Guthrie centre at Annamakerrig it is traditional to gift a work to the centre. This is a preliminary work towards the final piece given by the artist during his stay there. |

John Bratby was the leading light of the 'Kitchen Sink' school of painting. Upon graduating from the Royal College of Art in 1954 he became an instant success, renowned for his un-glamorous realist style, in which people were depicted amidst the chaos of domestic clutter. This is one of a series of works depicting the carnival in Venice, painted late in Bratby's career after his second marriage in 1973. Whilst his style had evolved from his earlier 1960s paintings, it retained that brightness and gaiety which characterises his work, and marks the start of a 'sea change' in style. Bratby's work is in many prestigious collections including the Royal Collection.

"Creativity has been described as pulling the pail up from the well or of holding the end of the golden thread. Images for me are surprises which emerge of their own volition and invite the viewer to participate again in the collective subconscious " (Noreen Rice, April 2000). Noreen Rice paints in a European style which reflects her living and painting in Spain with Felix Arnaut for the last decade. In her favourite palette of blues, this work combines her interest in the Orient with a southern European brightness, making an image which is striking but instantly understood.

These paired conversation pieces by Elizabeth Magill challenge us with their questions about the equivocal nature of human emotion. In particular they refer to the psychologically disturbed and deeply ambivalent heroes of Patricia Highsmiths novels from the 1950s. Highsmith was fascinated from an early age by case studies of people suffering mental illnesses such as schizophrenia. Her work came to prominence after Alfred Hitchcock adapted one of her stories, Strangers on a Train (1951), after which she became a studio favourite, with several of her subsequent novels were adapted for film, including The Talented Mr Ripley (1955), Ripley’s Game (1974) and Edith’s Diary (1977). The Savage Cruelty of People Like Us draws to mind Highsmith’s most famous and recurring character, Tom Ripley – an amoral, sexually ambiguous con artist. Like Highsmith’s writing, Magill’s paintings explore the possibility that behind the facades of normality people may hide dark and disturbing emotions.

Moonfield shows the harvest moon, heavy and pregnant in a night sky set alight by its brightness. This is one of a small series of paintings by Ross Wilson in 1990 celebrating the sense of "place" in Irish history and tradition. This is in tune with fellow Ulsterman John Hewitt's love for the ties between man and his townland: "Life is man and place and these have names". However, there is much more than a simple physical representation in these works. Complex layers of oil, acrylic, enamel and wax - built up and then sanded and scraped back - transform the seen into the unseen. A copy of the Kerlin Gallery exhibition catalogue accompanies this lot.

I used to spend some time observing the passing scene which was quite lively on the corner of King Street and Castle Street especially at this period in time. The paintings became a series of observers and passing heads... A Passing Head, unidentified, takes on its environment, the colour from peeling paint and dripping walls, flickering light from dim windows, rough walls and heavily framed to provide a limited aperture". |

This image was commissioned by the Lyric Theatre in Belfast for their production of Stewart Parker's play, Spokesong, and was used on the accompanying posters and programmes. It depicts one of the real life inspirations for the play, Raymond Stone, proprietor of Stone's bicycle shop, which was originally situated in Cromac Square and later moved to the Lower Ormeau Road. Raymond was the last generation of a famous Belfast bicycle family, whose most famous bicycle was the 'Stone Special' - a bicycle with exaggerated angles on its frame. Another relative, 'Pebble' Stone, had a shop in East Belfast. The portrait of Raymond was painted from life in his shop. He died shortly after it was completed.

Kenneth Mahood was born in Belfast in 1930. From 1945 to 1949 he was an apprentice lithographer before becoming a professional painter. He exhibited in Belfast, London and Dublin and won a CEMA scholarship to study art in Paris. His first cartoon was accepted by Punch when he was eighteen, and he later became not only a regular contributor but also, from 1960 to 1965, the magazine's Assistant Art Editor under William Hewison. In 1966 Mahood became the first-ever political cartoonist on The Times, and in the same year was a founder member of the British Cartoonists' Association. He left The Times at the end of 1968, but at the start of 1969 began working as a cartoonist for the Evening Standard. In 1971 he went to the Financial Times. In 1978 he was elected to the Punch Table, and in 1982 he moved to the Daily Mail to draw its "Compact Cartoon". Mahood has also contributed drawings to the New Yorker, produced a number of books and worked in collage.

The original owner of this work, Scottish singer Lena Zavaroni (1963-1999), was the youngest person to have her album in the UK's top ten album chart. She was discovered at the age of ten by producer Tommy Scott, who contacted Philip Solomon, impresario and founder of the Solomon Gallery. Philip's wife, Dorothy, became Zavaroni’s manager. The present work is testament to the Zavaroni-Solomon friendship that ensued.

Gerard Crofts was a singer with republican sympathies. His recordings of A Battle Hymn written by Constance de Markievicz, and Are You There, Moriarity? were popular among the internment camps after 1916. During the 1920s he performed in concerts at the Queen's Theatre, Dublin, alongside Madame Bannard-Cogley, from whose collection this work comes. Kernoff exhibited an oil portrait of Crofts at the RHA in 1929 (with Adam's, 24 September 2003, lot 42).

In the original carved giltwood frame of Daniel Egan, 26 Lower Ormond Quay, Dublin. A member of the Dublin Sketching Club, with whom she exhibited regularly from 1942 to 1961, Dorothy Day was a Dublin artist who painted mainly landscapes and still life. The titles of her works suggest she travelled extensively throughout Ireland, with scenes in Kilkenny and Limerick predominating. She showed six works at the RHA, but in the main painted for private pleasure and to benefit various charities which she supported.

At the age of fifty Isa Macnie, a long standing member of the Dublin United Arts Club, took to drawing caricatures of artistic, literary and political people of her day. They became an instant success among her circle of friends, and in 1925 she issued a limited edition book of 200 hand-coloured copies under the title, The Celebrity Zoo. These three sketches are rare surviving examples of the work of this Dublin eccentric (see Snoddy, p. 401). |
