Encouraged to paint by the late Derek Hill, he turned down an opportunity to go to art school, training instead as a carpenter. Jim Hunter (author of Tory Island and its artists, University of Ulster, 2003) has noted this background in carpentry lends a distinctive precision to Rodgers’ drawing (op. cit., p. 17).

SEAGULLS OVER THE CLIFFS OF MOHER, COUNTY CLARE
SEAGULLS OVER THE CLIFFS OF MOHER, COUNTY CLARE
John Shinnors (b.1950)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 22 February 2005 / 220

Published Estimate: €3,000-5,000

Price Realised: €2400

  • Medium: oil on board
  • Dimensions: 36 by 60cm., 14 by 23.5in.
  • Provenance: Purchased directly from the artist in 1974 by the family of the present owners, Co. Clare
  • Both this and the following work were painted whilst Shinnors was still a student at the Limerick School of Art, pre-dating his first solo exhibition at Goodwin’s Gallery in Limerick city by some four years. Whilst they are very early works, they do foreshadow his later development, both in terms of palette (particularly in the predominance of black) and subject matter: the Dún Aengus cliffs on Inis Mór and the Shannon estuary both being subjects of recent series. Both paintings were bought in 1974 by a friend who worked with Shinnors at the SBS factory in Shannon.

  • Signature: signed, inscribed and dated [2003] upper left; also signed on reverse by Sineád O’Connor
  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 122 by 183cm., 48 by 72in.
  • Provenance: Collection of Sineád O’Connor
  • This portrait of singer-songwriter Sineád O’Connor was originally commissioned for a Dublin nightclub which was being refurbished due to a fire, but was ultimately purchased by the sitter. Compositionally it references Roderic O’Conor’s Reclining Nude (NGI) - in turn a tribute to Velazquez’s Rokeby Venus. The view through the window shows the Pigeon House area of Dublin, an area of particular significance for O’Connor, and was included at her request. Jim Fitzpatrick is a Dublin born painter and graphic designer whose work draws strongly on Ireland’s Celtic mythology. For the past thirty years his work has become familiar to many in the form of posters, book jacket designs and album covers. He has also written and illustrated numerous books and designed a stained-glass window for Bewley’s Café in Mary Street, Dublin. He has long been a friend of O’Connor’s and designed the cover of her album, Faith and Courage, which was released in June 2000.
