  • Dimensions: 51 by 41cm., 20 by 16in.
  • A rare early oil by Hazel Martyn, signed and dated 1903. It is of an unknown sitter, a young girl pictured en plein air, in a rural landscape, which is suggestive of France, where in 1903 the twenty-three year old American was studying the Impressionist techniques. The artist is best known as Lady Lavery, the second wife of Sir John Lavery (1856-1941), whom she first met at the artist colony of Beg-Meil in Brittany the year this work was painted. A small number of her oil canvases are known dating from the period 1903-1905 including Canal in France (1904, private collection) and The Brown Baby, (1905, private collection), a painting of her daughter Alice, (born 1904, the child of Edward Livingston Trudeau whom Hazel married 1903), a work that she exhibited at the Salon in 1909, the year she married John Lavery. Her preferred medium was dry-point etching, which she studied in Paris in 1902 and again in 1903 with the Parisian etcher Edgar Chahine. In the spring of 1903 an exhibition of her European work was held in Chicago, the Chicago Daily News reported: “Men who know pictures are enthusiastic about her work”. Also in 1903 Sketches by Hazel Martyn was published by A. C. McClurg, Chicago, on behalf of the Arts Collector’s Club. This book of etchings features images of society ladies and includes a self-portrait. In 1908, as Hazel Martyn Trudeau, she illustrated Joseph Medill Patterson’s A Little Brother of the Rich, (Reilly and Briton, 1908). • Provenance: Collection of Lady Lucas; Phillip's, London, 7 June 1994, lot 36; Whence purchased by the Jefferson Smurfit Group; Private collection, Dublin
  • Exhibited: 'A Retrospective Exhibition of the works of John Lavery, 1880-1914', Grosvenor Gallery, London, 1914, catalogue no. 146
  • During his sojourns in Tangier between 1903 and 1914, Lavery painted many ‘nocturnes’. For the most part these depict the bay and the flat slab-like architecture of the old walled city. Overlooking the sea at night, noting subtle transitions of grey and blue, he was adopting the vocabulary of Whistler, an artist he greatly respected. He was also excited by the odd ways in which ‘the white city’ came to life in the cool of the evening as Arabs repaired to the rooftops to dance, play the gimbri, or gaze at the stars. As a landscape nocturne, the present canvas is unusual. Although he painted in the hills around the city, and on the roads to Fez and Tetuan, Lavery seldom ventured forth into these areas at night. ‘Protected’ by the Great Powers, on account of its strategic importance, the city was surrounded by brigands and rebel groups who reaped rich rewards from kidnapping prominent western visitors. The painter’s friend Walter Harris, The Times correspondent, was one of these luckless foreigners. Lavery records at least one hair-raising encounter of this type, yet despite the risks, he was attracted to the present scene. In the reduced light, the little river, possibly the Oueb Souami, snakes across the picture, forming an indigo pool to the side of the bridge, and balancing the dark shapes of the trees on the right. The inky hillsides and warm grey of the sky are combined to create the eerie sense of moonlight picking out the tiny figures on the bridge and the houses in the distance. A single star twinkles in the sky and all is still. The impression was sufficiently haunting for Lavery to wish to recall the painting for his major retrospective exhibition at the Grosvenor Gallery in 1914. Prof. Kenneth McConkey, University of Northumbria

  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 51 by 81cm., 20 by 32in.
  • A cousin and later brother-in-law of the author Edith Somerville, Egerton Coghill was born in Castletownshend, Co. Cork. He abandoned a career in engineering to pursue art, studying initially in Dusseldorf and later at the Académie Julian in Paris. In 1883-84 he resided briefly at Barbizon near Fontainebleu, working alongside the now famous Barbizon School of painters, whose manner of en plein air naturalism he emulated. From France he went to England, where he became a member of the New English Art Club, and eventually returned to Ireland where he settled in his hometown of Castletownshend. The local West Cork landscape inspired the bulk of his exhibits at the RHA, between the years 1882 and 1919. A retrospective exhibition was held in 1964 at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and a smaller show followed the next year at the Alpine Club in London.

  • Dorothy Elvery was the elder sister of Beatrice Elvery, later Lady Glenavy, and a well-known artist in her own right. She studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art, and later under Walter Osborne at the RHA painting school, where she was known as one of “the clever Misses Elverys”. She won the coveted Taylor Scholarship in 1904 and was exhibiting with the RHA by 1906. In 1910 she married an eminent South African surgeon and emigrated to that country, from where she continued to send paintings to the RHA and various other Dublin and London exhibitions. She developed a successful portraiture practice and was an official war artist during World War II. For further details see Snoddy, pages 298-300. The present example is a rare early work, painted prior to 1910, and in subject and treatment very similar to the three student works which she took with her when she left Ireland and which are illustrated in her biography, Everything You Do is a Portrait of Yourself.

He also showed twice at the Oireachtas Art Exhibitions of 1906 and 1907. His works tended to be on a rustic theme and featured quaint, anecdotal titles.

  • William Henry Brooke was the son of Henry Brooke(1738-1806), a Dublin-born historical painter, and grandson of Robert Brooke (fl. circa 1748), a portrait painter from Co.Cavan. William first practised as a portrait painter in Duke Street, Adelphi, exhibiting occasionally at the RA from 1810-1826 and the RHA from 1827-1846. He later concentrated most of his energies on illustration work for such volumes as Keightley’s Greek and Roman Mythology, Ryland’s History of Waterford and Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels. Strickland is unusually savage in his description of Brooke’s drawings as “witless and vulgar”, but Anne Crookshank and the Knight of Glin found his work to be charming. This lot includes two illustrations for Modern History (plates 23 and 24), five tromp l’oeil designs illustrating the lives of ancient Greek philosophers, Socrates, Plato et al; plus a medieval jousting scene among others. • In the catalogue to the above exhibition Dr S. B. Kennedy notes that this is a cubist inspired work, and that “the treatment of the figure, as with a good deal of early Cubism, is clearly indebted to native African sculptures which Rákóczi would have known both from the Trocadero Museum in Paris and Picasso’s work (cf. Nude in the Forest, La Grande Dryade, 1908, Hermitage, St Petersburg) of the early years of the century. The theme of the fisherman – which here may be autobiographical or perhaps biblical (cf. pécheur, ‘sinner’) and fishing in general, is one to which Rakóczi returned from time to time during his career”.

GALWAY - CITY OF TRIBES SERIES
GALWAY - CITY OF TRIBES SERIES
Kenneth Webb RWA FRSA RUA (b.1927)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 26 April 2005 / 150

Published Estimate: €6,000-8,000

Price Realised: €13200

  • Signature: signed lower right
  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 41 by 102cm., 16 by 40in.
  • Thomas Kenny has noted that by the mid-1960s “the West of Ireland was beginning to influence Kenneth Webb and the first major group of pictures to emerge from there were of Galway itself. If you stand at the end of Nimmo’s Pier in the Claddagh, and look towards the city, you have in one frame a remarkable panorama, ideal for those long Webb canvasses. Here are multicoloured buildings, church spires, old stone-arches, laneways and, of course, people. You can see the River Corrib, rushing to the sea, populated by hundreds of swans and thousands of seagulls, and in the foreground, the quayside with its moored boats, lobster pots and drying nets. Finally, the backdrop to all of this is a deep wide sky rich in sunset afterglow and striving cloud brought there by the Gulf Stream” (Thomas Kenny, Webb: A Profile, Kenny’s Gallery, Galway, 1990, page 74-75).
