Published Estimate: €150,000-200,000

  • Provenance: Collection of a prominent Cork businessman; thence by descent
  • An original example of this historic document published by the Irish Volunteers and Irish Citizen Army acting as "The Provisional Government of the Republic of Ireland" dated Monday 24th April 1916. This is the document that launched an uprising that changed Ireland forever. Comparable to the Declaration of the United States of America it is an historic relic of immense importance. John O'Connor in The Story of the 1916 Proclamation, Abbey Press, Dublin 1986 stated that there were 17 examples extant, of which at least six are in public institutions such as Dáil Éireann, The National Museum and University College Dublin. Two also exist in British Government archives and there is one in the Royal Collection in Buckingham Palace. Since 1986 about a dozen others have come to light from the original printing of less than 500. Most were destroyed during and after the Rising. Printed on poor quality paper those pasted to outdoor locations disintegrated easily. This example has all the typographical characteristics listed by O'Connor q.v. and J. J. Bouch The Republican Proclamation of Easter Monday 1916,(A paper read before the Bibliographical Society of Ireland, 25 March 1935, Three Candles Press, Dublin 1936, reprinted 1954), printed by letterpress on poor quality paper of a greyish white shade. the printed area is 29 by 18.25 inches. This example has been recently restored and conserved to museum standard, and is framed. Overall condition is very good for such an important rarity.

1916 PROCLAMATION OF THE IRISH REPUBLIC (HALF)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 12 June 2005 / 144

Published Estimate: €8,000-10,000

Price Realised: €8000

  • An exceedingly rare half sheet of the 1916 Proclamation. The proclamation was printed in two parts due to lack of type according to John O'Connor The story of the 1916 Proclamation. The top half was printed first and then the type was reset to print the bottom half. The British soldiers who recaptured Liberty Hall from the Citizen Army found the lower half frame of type still in the Wharfedale printing press and ran off a small number of copies as souvenirs. O'Connor, q.v., says "[these halfsheets] are very rare but one such copy is in Kilmainham Jail Museum". According to Joseph Bouch, (The Republican Proclamation of Easter Monday, 1916 Dublin, 1936) these half sheets were printed on two different coloured papers. Less than ten examples of these half sheets are recorded, making it even rarer than the full sheet document.

Published Estimate: €4,000-6,000

Price Realised: €5000

  • Complete letter, dated 10 February 1909, in Irish on Sgoil Éanna (at Cullenwood House) headed sheet of notepaper, giving details of the progress of a pupil, Roibeard Ó Riain. Addressed to a friend of Pearse's who had apparently encouraged the boy's father Eoghan Ó Riain to send his son to St. Enda's. In the letter Pearse thanks him profusely and compliments the boy who was apparently "very popular with the masters and the other boys". Pearse founded St. Enda's at Cullenwood House in Ranelagh in 1908, with himself as headmaster and Thomas MacDonagh as his assistant. It was planned as an Irish language and culture based boarding school for boys. It moved to The Hermitage in Rathfarnham in 1909. It became a crippling financial burden for Pearse but achieved considerable success as an educational establishment. Complete handwritten letters by Pearse such as this are rare. Traces of adhesive on blank reverse of the notepaper otherwise very good.
