  • Faulkner collaborated with the animal painter John MacPherson (fl.1858-1884) on at least one other occasion, exhibiting a view of Lough Derrydan, Connemara at the Cork Industrial Exhibition in 1883. The present view is looking towards Caislean-na-Circe formerly a stronghold of the Joyce clan and known as ‘Cock's Castle’, until the so-called pirate queen Grace O'Malley attacked and defeated the clan in the late sixteenth century after which the fortress was re-named ‘Hen's Castle’.

  • Born in Dublin into a prominent Quaker family, Josephine Webb studied at Alexandra College and the Queen’s Institute on Molesworth Street, where she won two silver medals for drawing. In 1878 she went to Paris to study at the Académie Julian with Louise Breslau and Anna Nordgren as fellow students. Upon her return to Dublin the following year she took a studio on Grafton Street and shortly after began exhibiting at the RHA. She also showed with the WCSI and the RBA, and held two solo exhibitions in Dublin in 1904 and 1908. Her work is included in the collections of the Hugh Lane Gallery and the NGI (see Snoddy, pages 696-7, and Irish Women Artists, 1987 exhibition catalogue, pages 192-3).

  • The second work is on a sheet of paper measuring 6 by 9.25 inches. In the original gilt frames of William Rodman and Co., Belfast. McGowan was a miniaturist based in London. He evidently had some Irish connections, for he exhibited with the RHA 1903-06 inclusive and with the Belfast Ramblers Sketching Club in 1888, where his exhibits included a Sheet of Figure Studies from Life. He also exhibited occasionally with the RA in London.
