  • Born in Belfast, the son of painter Thomas Bond Walker (1861-1933), he studied both with his father and Hans Iten (1874-1930). He was amongst the original ten members of the Belfast Art Society, elected in 1920,and in the following year began exhibiting at the RHA in Dublin. During the 1920s and '30s he worked mostly at portrait painting. However, during the Second World War he moved to Newcastle, Co. Down and shifted his energies towards landscape painting, teaching, and running a gallery (see Snoddy, pp 684-5).

Knox who exhibited a dozen works (flower studies, portraits and landscapes) with the Dublin Sketching Club, 1938-49.

  • A superb collection of Dublin picture postcards, mainly from the early 20th century, with many scarce and rare street scenes, unusual buildings, shops and statues. A magnificent photographic reference of a city at the time it was inhabited by Joyce, Yeats, Pearse, Collins, and the father, a 1916 Rising veteran, of the present owner, who spent over forty years building this collection. A section of over 100 cards depict the 1916 Rising including several rarities, while in complete contrast another range of over 70 cards depicts the Dublin International Exhibition of 1907 during the peaceful years of Edward VII’s reign. In all there are 2,137 cards housed in 7 albums. Condition overall is good to very fine.

Adolf Mahr was keeper of Antiquities at the National Museum of Ireland. This copy was sent personally by the author to Carmody with a request that he review it for one of the Northern papers. Fully bound in contemporary maroon morocco over bevelled boards, ruled in gilt and blind and with a gilt harp vignette stamped on front and lower boards. Raised bands at spine also tooled in gilt, with shamrocks between each band. Gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers and all edges gilt. Engraved half-title with vignette of Dangan Castle, map of Ireland by W. Hughes and 120 steel engraved plates with tissue guards. A handsome copy of one of the leading illustrated works on Ireland.
