His first solo exhibition took place at the Tom Caldwell Gallery in 1972 when he was just eighteen years of age. His first solo exhibition in London was held at the ICA in 1976. His first collection of poems and drawings, A White Cat With A Human Face, was published in 1974, sponsored by John Hewitt and Gladys Maccabe among others. Several collections have been published since with translations in French, Spanish, Danish and Russian. Last year the Caldwell Gallery published Mourne, poems by Paul Yates with images by Basil Blackshaw, one of a number of successful collaborations between Yates and Blackshaw. Yates’ film works have won various international awards and most recently his highly acclaimed film on Pop painter Peter Blake, Masters of The Canvas, was screened as part of the Tate’s ‘Art in the 60’s’ season and chosen along with Scorcese’s No Direction Home to celebrate 35 years of BBC2 Arena productions at the BFI, London. Among numerous commissions Yates has produced a suite of video art works for the Manako Corporation, Japan and paintings for Kings College, Cambridge. The painting featured here comes from a series with the collective title of klin, an Inuit word meaning ‘remembered snow’. At present Yates is himself the subject of a forthcoming television documentary for German television titled The Last Outsider.
