Donegal, 1907', oil on canvas board, 18 by 24 inches, and depicting Joseph and James Abernathy on the River Clady.

  • Painted in the Scottish office, with the banner in the background of Cairncross Jewellers, 18 St John Street, Perth, Scotland. The Abernathy pearl, affectionately known as 'Little Willie', after William Abernathy, who found it in the River Tag in 1967, was bought by Cairncross for £60,000 Weighing 34.5 grains, it was said to be of superb lustre and shape, and exceptional in all respects. Also with lot is a copy of a secretarial letter from HM The Queen to Cairncross Jewellers, thanking them for the design of a brooch setting for the Tay Pearl, which was also fished by William Abernathy, plus news clippings relating to a legal dispute over the same pearl

  • The engraving is based on a painting by R. Smirk 1753-1845, and executed by Francis Howard ARA, 1759-1797. The Commemoration, marking the 25th anniversary of the composer’s death, was a series of concerts of Handel’s music during which two performances of Messiah took place. ED Mackerness described the Handel Commemoration as “the single most important event in the history of English music” (A Social History of English Music, London 1964). Messiah was given its first performance in O’Neal’s Music Hall, Fishamble Street, Dublin in 1742
