SUMMER FLOWERS IN A WHITE VASE, c.1940-45
SUMMER FLOWERS IN A WHITE VASE, c.1940-45
Moyra Barry (1885-1960)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 18 May 2009 / 105

Published Estimate: €1000-1500

Price Realised:

  • Signature: signed lower left; inscribed on reverse; also with original Victor Waddington Galleries label on reverse
  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 51 by 41cm., 20 by 16in.
  • Provenance: Victor Waddington Galleries, Dublin; Whence purchased by Mr. John Mowbray; The Mowbray Estate Sale; Private collection
  • Painted in the early to mid-1940s, Barry’s painting of garden flowers, obtruding haphazardly from a porcelain vase, reflects the great change that had taken place in flower painting since the Victorian era. Gone are the stiff, formal displays of hothouse flowers and exotics; in their stead Barry offers an idiosyncratic - indeed rather whimsical - arrangement of summer flowers, arranged without the aid of floristry wire and with an eye for colour rather than form. Visible among the bunch are auriculas, snapdragon, anemones, and several varieties of daisies, all of which almost certainly came from her back garden in Rathmines. With thanks to Jane Eckett for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.

MIXED FLOWERS IN A GLASS BOWL, c.1943-44
MIXED FLOWERS IN A GLASS BOWL, c.1943-44
Moyra Barry (1885-1960)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 18 May 2009 / 107

Published Estimate: €800-1000

Price Realised: €800

  • Signature: signed lower right
  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 30 by 41cm., 12 by 16in.
  • Provenance: Victor Waddington Galleries; Whence purchased by Mr. John Mowbray; The Mowbray Estate Sale; Private collection
  • With its low vantage point, this close-up view of a bowl of flowers offers a mere hint of sky or garden beyond before directing the eye back to its primary subject: flowers. Barry combines garden and field flowers - daisies, nasturtium and cornflowers - in a high-keyed composition that glows with light. The distinctive frame was frequently used in the early 1940s by Victor Waddington, who was a staunch supporter of Barry throughout her career, giving her nine solo exhibitions and myriad opportunities to sell her work through group shows and regular gallery hangs. With thanks to Jane Eckett for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
