  • Frank Egginton, like his father, Wycliffe Egginton RI was a landscape painter born in Wallasey, Cheshire. During Frank’s early childhood the family relocated to Devon, where Wycliffe had been appointed head master of the College of Art and Frank attended Newton College and later Netwon Abbot College of Art. In the 1930s Frank made his inaugural visit to County Donegal, while he was there he gained a number of commissions for pictures from a friend of his father’s and in subsequent years he exhibited these Irish works, such as The Calabber River, Co. Donegal, in the Royal Scottish Academy in 1936. In 1938 he travelled to America and spent several months painting the landscape and living a nomadic lifestyle. During the Second World War he worked in a Belfast factory, and in 1946 he relocated with his wife to Cookstown, County Tyrone. In 1952 the Victor Waddington Galleries, Dublin, held a joint exhibition for Frank Egginton and Howard Knee. ‘Dublin Magazine’ of 1952 recorded this exhibition referring to both artists as belonging to the 'school of drawing-room painters'. The article favoured Egginton’s watercolours for their depth and atmosphere and for his ‘wash’ which it was felt was more ‘free and lucent’ than that of Knee. A regular exhibitor with the Fine Art Society in London, Egginton exhibited well over one hundred works with them during his lifetime. His other main exhibiting venues included the Royal Cambrian Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, London, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and at Rodman's Art Gallery, Belfast. The Gallery at Dunfanaghy in County Donegal, a former 1840s fever hospital, was the brainchild of the artist, and continues in operation today, now run by Egginton’s daughter and son-in-law, Alan and Moira Harley.

Retrospectives of Thompson's work have been held in Christchurch (1990) and at the Musée de Pont-Aven, near Concarneau (1992), and examples from his oeuvre are contained in all major New Zealand galleries.

  • The tradition of cockfighting was introduced to Greece c.524-460 BC and later adopted by the Romans. The ancient ritual has been almost completely eradicated in modern Europe, but would have still been popular in Andalucia during the years in which Campbell frequented the region. Known as “the poor man’s bull” this blood sport, like the bullfights, proved an immense source of inspiration for the artist who had wholeheartedly adopted all elements of Spanish culture. In this work Campbell focuses on the vibrancy of the bird’s colourful plumage which recall the costumes of the bullfighters or the decoration from the many ‘fiestas’ he depicted.

  • La Rencontre, meaning, The Encounter, depicts three of the most influential men in the arts of the 20th century; James Joyce, Salvador Dalí and Pablo Picasso. In an interior setting but with references to Dublin (Howth Head), Paris (Eiffel Tower) and North Africa (camel), Farrell comically unites these three artistic genii in this tour de force work. All three subjects were to provide recurring inspiration to Farrell, who, at this point in his career was becoming more interested in literary ideas. As a result of this, from the 1980s onwards, the tone of his work becomes more subjective. This etching with aquatint complements La Fete, 1984, an oil and acrylic on canvas of the same subject.

Frances Ruane in the exhibition catalogue for the 1981 show comments, "...Cooke displaces fragments of organic forms and then proceeds to rework them. Isolated and abstracted from the whole, the fragments seem to embody essential structural characteristics of living matter....The bones and the plant forms are a hymn to life: that things grow, move, change, decay and regenerate." This comment reflects the initial motivation behind the works, which, in the Hendriks catalogue were accompanied by the nursery rhyme, "Air to Water to Soil to Stone, As Blood to Flesh and Flesh to Bone."

  • Exhibited: `Robert Ballagh, Works from the Studio 1959 - 2006', Gorry Gallery, Dublin, 20 September - 5 October 2006, catalogue no. 69, illustrated p.83
  • Originally, these works formed part of a triptych entitled, Silicon Suite I, II & III (1986). James Gorry, in the exhibition catalogue for `Robert Ballagh - Works from the Studio 1959-2006', describes these pieces as follows, "...Silicon Suite is a threefold meditation on the potentially destructive imbalance in Western Culture between science and creativity but also a reflection on Ireland's contribution to Technology and Art. The Ambidextrous Paradigm (Suite III), whose somewhat tongue-in-cheek title alludes to the so called opposition of functions in the left and right of the human brain, ingeniously and provocatively juxtaposes images such as Einstein's Head, a music sheet by Bach and a nuclear mushroom cloud seen at the end of a series of classical, piranesian arches.”

  • A second work entitled, Tory Island from the Mainland, by Patsy Dan's brother, Ruarí L. Rodgers also with this lot. Patsy Dan Rodgers, King of Tory, was one of the original members of the Tory Island Primitive School of Art, whose patron was the renowned artist Derek Hill. Patsy Dan, along with fellow artists, Anton Meenan, James Dixon and his brother, Ruarí Rodgers first brought their art from the isolated Gaeltacht area that is Tory Island into the public mainland domain when they held their inaugural collective exhibition at the New Gallery, Belfast in 1968. During these formative years, Rodgers was an instrumental campaigner against Government plans to relocate the inhabitants of Tory to the Donegal mainland following the 1974 storms which left those on Tory Island cut off for nearly two months. Owing to this, as well as his artistic and cultural contributions to the island, he has since been granted the title of King of Tory. In October 2003 the University of Ulster Art Gallery, Belfast paid homage to the naive style of this collective of artists in a group exhibition of Tory Islander art. Patsy Dan's continues to produce to date and has had recent exhibitions in the Cristeph Gallery, Letterkenny, County Donegal.
