Kevin Geary (b.1952)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 28 September 2009 / 157

Published Estimate: €500-700

Price Realised: €450

  • Signature: signed and with title on reverse
  • Medium: acrylic on canvas
  • Dimensions: 51 by 51cm., 20 by 20in.
  • Django Reinhardt (1910-1953) was one of the first well-known jazz musicians in Europe. Born in Belgium, Reinhardt's Gypsy nickname "Django" was Romani for "I awake." His innovative and distinctive style takes influence from his time spent in gypsy encampments close to Paris during his youth. His music has been the source of inspiration across the arts and has featured in contemporary films such as, Lasse Hallström's Chocolat and The Aviator. The artist writes: “This series, Homage to Django Reinhardt, started whilst listening to his music. The whole series, including this painting, has reflected the upbeat, colourful, fast, and overlaid sounds of his guitar playing. I continue to paint these works whilst listening to Django, and his music never fails to inspire me, and push me to create these very expressionist abstract works. The textures, overlays and rhythms of each work reflect Django's playing. Listen to his music while you look at my work, and you'll see exactly why I call these works Homage to Django Reinhardt.

  • Selma McCormack, painter and sculptor, manoeuvres through both her disciplines with equal enthusiasm adding to each her own distinctive style which she has been developing since she began exhibiting in the 1980s. Her sculptural work tends to be figurative in nature, bronze being her medium of choice. Her paintings, although more abstract, retain a very comprehensible form of expression. Now a full-time artist McCormack divides her time between Spiddal and Dublin. On her paintings, Fred Johnston, author, poet and critic, has commented, “These paintings have a deep sensitivity suggesting themes beyond the obvious. This is art in motion and can at times be simultaneously formidable and comforting.” Also see lot 162.

ABSTRACT, 1983
Felim Egan (b.1952)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 28 September 2009 / 161

Published Estimate: €2000-3000

Price Realised: €2000

  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 60 by 41cm., 23.5 by 16in.
  • Exhibited: It is highly probable that this work was exhibited at Egan's one-man exhibition at the Oliver Dowling Gallery, Dublin, 1983 where the discriptive titles of four of the works exhibited as well as the dimensions correspond with this work
  • Felim Egan represented Ireland at the Paris Biennale in 1980 and the Sao Paulo Bienal in 1985. Since 1979, he has had more than 50 solo exhibitions in Europe and the USA. Stylistically, Egan's work, with its geometric elements and abstract space can be compared with the Russian Constructivists of the 1920s. He creates a rhythm across the canvas with sleek lines and gestural curves. Music is an integral part of Egan's life and his art as evidenced in this piece as well as subsequent three-dimensional neon installations which were also showcased in 1983. The year this work was executed, Egan was awarded the Premier UNESCO Prize for the Arts in Paris.

Auction Date / Lot No.: 28 September 2009 / 163

Published Estimate: €4000-5000

  • Medium: bronze on marble base; edition of 6
  • Dimensions: 52 by 39cm., 20.5 by 15.5in.
  • Provenance: Gerald Goldberg collection; His sale, Mealy's, 5 October 2004, lot 334; Whence purchased by the present owner
  • Exhibited: 'An Exhibition of Sculpture and Drawings by John Behan', Kenny's, Galway, September 1975, catalogue no. 2; 'John Behan', Cork Arts Society, Lavitts Quay, Cork, 1-12 June 1977, catalogue no. 27
  • Another cast of this work is in the collection of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, mistakenly attributed to F.E. McWilliam. Seamus Heaney writes on Behan’s work: “…These sculptures please us by their materiality, by their substantial physical presence, their bronze in-placeness, their this-worldness….for they are not in the least otherworldly. They are produced by somebody who knows the behaviour of bronze as it was known in the workshops of Rodin and Michelangelo. And yet in spite of the down-to-earthiness and this-worldness of these images John has made, there is also present in them and behind them a sense that they are vessels of spirit, symbols of human knowledge, images, as Yeats said 'that yet/Fresh images beget'."

Over the next few years, Larkin developed a special art course for students, which was subsequently recognized by the VEC and the Department of Education. He served with the RAF during World War II, after which he went to live in Ireland, where Graham was born in 1954. Graham attended Sandford Park School, later graduating from the Dun Laoghaire school of Art and Design with a Diploma in Fine Art sculpture. He worked for a time in Telifís Éireann (now known as RTE) as a designer. In 1976 he won the Royal Canada Trust Award for young Sculptors and in 1981 he co-founded Wicklow Fine Art Press. Through the Apollo Gallery in Dublin he received commissions to paint Sylvester Stallone, Christy Moore, John B. Keane and Don King. Amongst his better known works are his “Gangster” series, seen in famous restaurants and hotels, the set of large portraits of the Taoisigh of Ireland which sold for in excess of £250,000, and his Irish silver chess set created in collaboration with David Linley. He has recently created a series of Aubusson tapestries which have attracted critical acclaim, and has returned to his first love, sculpture. In 2008 An Post released two Knuttel-designed stamps to commemorate the Summer Olympics that year and he was commissioned to produce a work to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of the DART this year, which has been reproduced on billboards all over Dublin.

In 1945, Lurçat, along with the artists Marc Saint-Saëns and Jean Picart Le Doux, founded the Association of Tapestry Cartoon-Painters, which spearheaded the revival of tapestry as a form of original site specific modern architectural decoration. Jean Picart le Doux is known as one of the most creative and prolific tapestry designers of the 20th century. His works are highly sought after and form part of many private and public collections internationally. This work, Valet de Tréfle, was designed from an earlier cartoon by the artist executed in 1972.
