FRANCIS BACON, 1987
FRANCIS BACON, 1987
Alastair Thain (British, b.1961)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 30 November 2009 / 101

Published Estimate: €4000-6000

Price Realised: €4000

  • Medium: c-type print; unique (printed 2005)
  • Dimensions: 100 by 84cm., 39.5 by 33in.
  • Literature: Alastair Thain, 'Skin Deep: The Portraits of Alastair Thain', Viking Adult, 1992 (reproduced)
  • This rare and candid portrait of Francis Bacon was shot by renowned photographer Alastair Thain. Thain, who was born in Germany in 1961 studied photography at the London College of Printing in the early 1980s, and by the age of twenty-four had achieved such recognition as to have work hanging in the National Portrait Gallery; the gallery is now home to twenty of his portraits, Vivienne Westwood and Sir Anthony Hopkins among them. Thain’s skill lies in his ability to capture familiar faces and present them in an unfamiliar way. His portrait of the purportedly shy Francis Bacon is testament to this gift. Shot in Colony Rooms London in 1987 this work is not only a dramatic and sizeable example from Thain’s oeuvre it is also an exclusive one-off print created in 2005 as a unique work commissioned by the Kunsthalle , Mannheim for their exhibition of portraits by Thain shown at the Kunsthalle from 4 June to 13 November 2005. Thain’s gift in the genre of portraiture pivots around his extraordinary ability to communicate and empathise with his subject. The result of this discourse moves his photographs out of the realm of documentation and formulaic depictions of familiar individuals towards something deeper and more universal. His photographs reveal elements of the portrayed that are typically veiled behind a façade. When this photograph was executed in 1987 Bacon was in his late seventies and his status in the arts was cemented through numerous solo and retrospective exhibitions worldwide. Two years previous to this portrait the Tate Gallery, London played host to a major retrospective of Bacon’s oeuvre comprising one hundred and twenty-five works. During this period Bacon’s style mirrored his persona and became knowingly enigmatic. His pictorial language was paired back to its essentials such that the human body, as depicted in Study of the Human Body, 1982 was savagely reduced to a stump and a pair of legs or inferred by its remains in Blood on the Floor–Painting, 1986. Thain spent ten years photographing actors and artists for magazines in Britain and America including such publications as the New York Times, Face and Interview. This portrait falls into this body of work in which Thain carved out his own unique groove in the genre. His style is marked out by his larger than life rendering of his subjects coupled with his technical innovations in the medium. Thain spent fifteen years devising a unique camera technique which employs the same large format ultra-high definition camera employed by NASA to photograph the Earth from Space. The result; a hyperrealist representation offering unparalleled intimacy and insight into his subject, in this case Francis Bacon. The viewer is almost forced into dialogue with the subject, overawed by the sudden closeness of the subject. This magnified depiction simultaneously highlights both the confidence and power of Bacon as artist and his fragility as man. Upon later reflection, Thain recalls his encounter with Francis Bacon fondly despite broadening his horizons beyond portraiture by the mid-1990s. His other subjects have included Jack Nicholson, Andy Warhol and John Malkovich to name but a few.

FRANCIS BACON AT MURIEL'S, COLONY ROOM CLUB, SOHO, 1984
FRANCIS BACON AT MURIEL'S, COLONY ROOM CLUB, SOHO, 1984
Kevin Geary (b.1952)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 30 November 2009 / 103

Published Estimate: €1500-2000

Price Realised: €1150

  • Signature: signed lower right; titled and dated top centre
  • Medium: pencil on paper
  • Dimensions: 28 by 21cm., 11 by 8.25in.
  • Kevin Geary has executed portraits of some of the world's most prominent people over the last thirty-five years with examples found in National Portrait Gallery in London as well as the Abbey Theatre, Dublin (Cyril Cusack). Francis Bacon was known personally to the artist and the two drank together occasionally at the Colony Room Club in Soho (known as Muriel's after Muriel Belcher, the original owner), as well as the French pub on Dean Street, and the Chelsea Arts Club. This sketch of Bacon, drawn from life, was executed on one such occasion and has remained in the possession of the artist in its original sketchbook until recently. Few portraits of Bacon done from life exist, due to the fact that Bacon hated sitting for his portrait. This portrait sketch is the only portrait by Geary of Bacon and is therefore a unique and highly desirable historical work.

  • Literature: Rothschild, Mouton, `Paintings for Labels', Baron Philippe de Rothschild, SA, exhibiting catalogue, 1995, p.50, ill. p.51
  • Also with this work is the 1995 exhibition catalogue for Paintings for Labels. In reference to Bacon's label the catalogue describes the artist's unique interpretation for the label as follows, "...set against flat-painted backgrounds, often in very vivid colours, bodies stretch and contract as if in a distorted mirror, imprisoned in a network of geometric lines obeying no recognisable perspective. They exist in an enclosed limbo that evokes both classical tragedy and the suffering of daily life. As a man who loved wine, Bacon created a weird, formal dance about a wine-glass for the Mouton Rothschild 1990 label, distorting it to the curve of the bottle."

  • In February 2001 The RHA hosted a solo exhibition of the work of Richard Kingston entitled, ‘Causeway’. The Solomon Gallery followed with ‘Causeway II’ in the same year. In the catalogue for this exhibition, Kingston explained the ever-changing subject of the Giant's Causeway where the environment - influenced by the changing tides and light - affected his subject and therefore his interpretation of same. "I painted the causeway from the high ground and at shore level. At first I tried fitting the rocks into some kind of geometric order but soon got bored with this. Then, I looked closer and started again, taking smaller aspects and expanding them into larger paintings, at the same time retaining the essence of the causeway.”

Having exhibited at the RHA in 1942 his artistic skills were rewarded in his final year at NCAD in the form of a scholarship from the Spanish Government. However, having decided that art education was his vocation, he began full-time teaching in 1953 at Ballinasloe Vocational School. Larkin later held a position in Mullingar Vocational School and Dun Laoghaire Technical College. Over the next few years, Larkin developed a special art course for students which was subsequently recognized by the VEC and the Department of Education. This in turn led to the establishment of the Dun Laoghaire School of Art. He wrote a book entitled Art Learning and Teaching: A Seven Year Manual for the Primary/Elementary Teacher. While he continued in education, Larkin's career as an artist was also flourishing. He participated in the local Art Guild in Mullingar, the Aisling Gallleries, New York, The Robinson Gallery, Dublin and exhibited about fifty works in the RHA up until the time of his death.

Her childhood in the West of Ireland forms a driving force in the subject matter of her work which frequently depicts rural landscapes and their inhabitants. She has exhibited with the Royal Hibernian Academy, The Royal Ulster Academy and Iontas among others. The subject of this work, Spanish Arch, is located on the left bank of the Corrib, where Galway's river meets the sea. Originally known as Ceann an Bhalla (Head of the Wall). this 16th century bastion was added to Galway's town walls to protect merchant ships from looting. Its present name 'Spanish Arch' refers to former merchant trade with Spain, whose ships often docked under its protection.
