  • Dimensions: 36 by 25cm., 14 by 10in.
  • In 1974, The Barrenhill Gallery, Baily, County Dublin held an exhibition of recent works by Gerald Davis from June 1-30. This exhibition featured in an article by Harriet Cooke in the Irish Times on 5 June that year. Cooke noted, "…despite the fact that most of the work in the show appears abstract, Davis is very much a romantic painter. His smaller pieces are perhaps the tighter and more satisfying works but the larger ones such as Meditation with its glowing centre emerging from the blue ground have a firm Spatialist feeling...He manages to use orange and purple without any trendy overtones...The gem is a cool, grey painting using a much shorter brush stroke than Davis generally has... one feels that this is a point of departure; he may be taking off into an area which is much more personal and tougher." In the same year Davis exhibited in New York in the Seán Desmond Gallery and with the Cork Arts Society. Four years previous Davis opened an Art Gallery on Capel Street, Dublin to showcase both his own work and that of emerging Irish artists.

  • Born in Limerick, St George Hare's father was a dentist from Ipswich, Suffolk, who married the daughter of his employer, St George Freeman, from Waterford. His uncle, Jabez Hare, was an artist who died at the tender age of seventeen; a tablet was erected to his memory in the town of Ipswich, as "a record of early talent and worth". St George Hare studied at the Limerick School of Art for three years under Nicholas A. Brophy, before moving to London to study at the Royal College of Art, South Kensington. He first exhibited at the RHA in 1881 and at the RA in 1884. Subjects included portraits, landscape, still life and - surprising for an Irish academic artist of the period - exotic nudes. One such was donated to the National Gallery in Victoria, whilst a carefully modelled still life of fish hangs in the Limerick City Gallery. Hare also exhibited regularly at the ROI and the RI, as well as with the Chelsea Arts Club, of which he was a founder member. Sir Hugh Lane included his work in the London Guildhall exhibition of Irish painters in 1906 and his work was also exhibited regularly at the Walker Gallery, Liverpool and the Manchester City Art Gallery (see Snoddy, pp. 224-5).

  • Signature: All with stamp of The Herbert Hinkins Juvenile Drama and Theatre Collection, Oxford on reverse
  • Medium: reproduction prints
  • Dimensions: 36 by 25cm., 14 by 10in.
  • Provenance: Acquired by the present owner from the Herbert Hinkins Juvenille Drama & Theatre Collection, Oxford.
  • Whist living in Devon (at Snails Castle), Jack B. Yeats wrote a number of plays for the miniature theatre all of which were published by Elkin Mathews and intended to be performed in a miniature toy theatre, for children. One of the published plays, The Treasure of the Garden, came with cut-out characters and sets (which were hand-coloured). Few survive today as they were used to perform the play. The other two published plays were illustrated with scenes from the plays, but did not have the cut out characters in the publication. They were published in small pamphlet form, unlike Treasure of the Garden, which was published in a large format so that the characters and sets could be easily cut out. The drawings in this lot however, were taken from the illustrations in these two smaller books, and were created so that the plays could be performed in a similar manner. Jack B. Yeats also wrote and illustrated two other children’s books, which were published by Elkin Mathews, in like format, but these were not plays; The Bosun and the Bob-tailed Comet, 1904 and The Little Fleet, 1909.
