  • Mary Swanzy’s eclectic style drew on trends she discovered upon her many travels throughout her lengthy career spanning almost eighty years. These two works stem from the latter years of World War II when the tone of her work adopted a distinct symbolic and fantastical edge. These peculiar characters reflect a darker, moodier Swanzy and contrast greatly with her soft, rhythmic cubist landscapes. But in their arresting use of colour and powerful composition, both constants throughout her oeuvre, they complement the satirical tone and demand the viewer’s attention.

THE WAYSIDE GROTTO
THE WAYSIDE GROTTO
Daniel O'Neill (1920-1974)

  • Signature: signed lower left; with typed exhibition label on reverse
  • Medium: oil on board
  • Dimensions: 64 by 76cm., 25 by 30in.
  • Daniel O’Neill began painting in 1939 just before the onset of World War II. One year later he exhibited in a small group show at the Moll Gallery Belfast where, discouragingly, none of his works sold. Later during the blitz O’Neill along with his artistic companion Gerard Dillon experimented in sculpture owing to the large quantity of rubble and debris on the Belfast streets. In 1943 they held a joint exhibition of paintings at the Contemporary Pictures Gallery, 133 Lower Baggot Street, Dublin. O’Neill showed seven works at this show and Snoddy lists three of their titles as, Head of Christ, Wayside Murder and Clowns. Two of his seven works were sold at this exhibition. (See Snoddy, p. 492) Wayside Grotto was possibly one of these two successful sales in 1943. The title would indicate continuity with that of Wayside Murder while the sombre tone and religious subject matter echoes that of Head of Christ.

It is likely that the three figures in this work represent the artist’s deceased brothers which appeared regularly in Dillon’s oeuvre from the mid 1960s in different guises and landscapes. Dressed Up is reminiscent of several other ‘imaginative paintings’ from this period such as Magic in the Sky, 1968 from the O’Driscoll Collection, sold through Whyte’s, 31 May, 2010 lot 3 for €28,000. The textured landscape and intense palette in Dressed Up is unearthly and reinforces the dominance of the fantastical in this work, during this period. The menacing figures of the masked brothers, each gazing over their right shoulder, creates a sense of unease. Their presence in Dillon’s work is haunting evidence of the artist’s preoccupation with his own mortality. His three brothers died of heart related illnesses in quick succession between 1962 and 1966. Many of the works from this period featured the clown Pierrot. James White, in his book Gerard Dillon: An Illustrated Biography, notes that Dillon used the figure of Pierrot as an alter ego.

Dillon held one-man exhibitions with the Dawson Gallery Dublin almost annually from 1957 to his death 1971.

The Ambidextrous Paradigm (Suite III), whose somewhat tongue-in-cheek title alludes to the so called opposition of functions in the left and right of the human brain, ingeniously and provocatively juxtaposes images such as Einstein's Head, a music sheet by Bach and a nuclear mushroom cloud seen at the end of a series of classical, Piranesian arches.”

She also held a joint exhibition with Brian Bourke at the Galway Art Centre in 1995. With regards to the Fenton Gallery exhibition in 2000 the artist notes, "The symbolic meaning of a thing may be the opposite of its actual nature: Fire is a natural symbol of life and passion and it is the one element in which nothing can actually live..." The paintings from this exhibition were based on fires lit at Jerpoint Glass, Stoneyford and The Quay, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. They were later illustrated in Profile: Bernadette Kiely, published in 2002 by the Arts Council (see p.33-35).
