  • Printed by S. Callen & Co Belfast and London. A very rare and desirable collector’s item. Paul Henry’s paintings lent themselves to poster designs and he received many commissions, principally from the London, Midland and Scottish Railway, who ran the Irish Sea passenger ships in the 1920s to 1940s. Even after nationalisation British Railways continued to use his landscapes and the Irish Tourist Board were using a Henry painting in a poster design in the 1970s.

"SEE IRELAND FIRST", c.1926-1928
Paul Henry RHA (1876-1958)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 13 December 2010 / 129

Published Estimate: €300-400

Price Realised: €280

  • Signature: signed in the plate lower right
  • Medium: colour poster
  • Dimensions: 76 by 64cm., 30 by 25in.
  • This composite image is typical of Henry's style. The cross is probably from Monasterboice, the distant castle certainly appears to be Grace O'Malley's on the southern tip of Achill and the mountain in the background is probably Corraun which lies directly across the estuary from the castle.
This rare poster almost certainly dates from around 1926-8, a time when Henry made a number of such images for the LMS and other bodies. Now reduced to a stand alone image, this poster would have once read in the lower margin, "For Full Particulars Apply Within, Literature and Information Free, Irish Tourist Association, Dublin, Ireland." Such projects were an important source of income for the artist.

With thanks to Dr. S.B. Kennedy for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.

  • Medium: watercolour over pencil
  • Dimensions: 27 by 46cm., 10.7 5 by 18in.
  • Contained within original gilt frame and mount. Alexander Williams travelled the length and breath of Ireland recording scenes of the Irish countryside, many of which later featured in the text, Beautiful Ireland, Leinster, Ulster, Munster, Connaught Painted by Alexander Williams and Described by Stephen Gwynn, 1910. In the text William chooses to illustrate The Minaun Cliffs, Achill Island (Connaught, p. 51), however, his description of the island is perhaps better reflected in this work as Gwynn notes, "But for all that it may offer of wilderness, of grandeur, and of interest, Achill has no charm for me. Poverty is a show there: in the village of Keel can still be seen beehive-shaped wigwams rather than houses; and it always seems as if the elements there had been too strong for man and left him huddled and cowering on the earth."

Desmond Turner (b.1923)

Auction Date / Lot No.: 13 December 2010 / 144

Published Estimate: €300-400

Price Realised: €260

  • Signature: signed and dated lower right
  • Medium: watercolour
  • Dimensions: 27 by 39cm., 10.7 5 by 15.5in.
  • The paintings of Desmond Turner form part of a landscape tradition that in Ireland goes back to Paul Henry, J.H. Craig, Frank McKelvey and Charles Lamb. In the main, the fjord-like inlet of Killary Harbour in County Galway, the deserted loughs of County Mayo and the habitations of Achill Island are his main subject matter. In his paintings Turner expertly captures a sense of the daily life of the islanders in their environment. The feeling of stillness that is evident in many of his compositions is characteristic of a good deal of the west of Ireland and sets the mood for much of Turner's work.
