  • Queen Victoria’s Great Seal of Ireland, obverse with a relief portrait of the mounted Queen attended by a page above an Irish harp garlanded by shamrocks, surrounded by the legend Victoria Dei Gratia Brita[nnio]rum Regina Fidei Defensor, reverse with the Queen on her throne flanked by attendants above her coat of arms. The reverse appears upside-down when the seal is turned, due apparently to a production fault. Examples of the Great Seal of Ireland (used to authenticate significant documents relating to her Irish realm) are rare. Hilary Jenkinson’s ‘Guide to Seals in the Public Record Office’ (1954) states that ‘a fairly intensive search some years ago in England and Ireland for impressions of the Irish Seals produced for all five types a total of only forty, for the period from the thirteenth century onward’ [a period encompassing about one hundred sovereigns].
