The Bill was the third pillar of Gladstone’s Irish policy, after disestablishment of the Church of Ireland and land reform. Initially it was welcomed, but it was denounced by the Catholic hierarchy, and was opposed by others affected. In the end it was defeated by three votes in the Commons, with 65 Irish members voting against and only 15 in favour. Gladstone had described the Bill as ‘vital to the honour and existence of the Government’, and he resigned (briefly) the following day. In a small quarto morocco-backed notebook, a very useful compilation for scholars.

The failure of the bank bears remarkable similarities to more modern crises, over-extending credit and holding inadequate reserves, insider lending to directors without adequate security which resulted in a take-over of the Munster's assets and liabilities by a new institution. Also with a copy of an essay by Cormac Ó Grada relating to the bank failure in which he cites this unpublished material. (3 items)
