  • Stairs notes: ”The angle from which we view this group of objects is unusual in that we appear to be looking down, rather than across at them. Objects are faceted, which suggests an influence of Cubism - but more so of its pictorial qualities rather than its theoretical objectives. The sole use of blue, both in the delineation and modelling of forms, accords a great sense of solidity, a denseness which links all the forms together.”

In Citizen Artist, Carty notes Ballagh’s strong connection with his mentor Micheal Farrell, a Meath artist, who was greatly influenced by the illuminated manuscript of The Book of Kells. Ballagh's stance on art mirrored Farrell who stated, "Art is above politics but not above humanity" (Carty, p.94), thus Ballagh's technique and approach to politicised subjects rejected abstract representation in favour of a focused statement and a clean execution. The original oil and acrylic on canvas on which these watercolours are based can be found in the collection of The House of Humour and Satire, Gabrovo, Bulgaria.
