Bernadette Madden (b.1948)

  • Medium: batik
  • Dimensions: 65 by 53cm., 25.7 5 by 20.7 5in.
  • This batik was one of a small number of studies by Madden towards a complete set of 'Stations of the Cross' for a commission for the Holy Cross Abbey, Tipperary. "In Ireland, the name Bernadette Madden is virtually synonymous with batik. That is so because she has taken a medium that was chiefly associated with decorative craft and developed it as a means of artistic expression. In doing so she has, with exceptional technical virtuosity both revealed the versatility of batik and exploited its painterly possibilities as never before. It is evident from her work that she exercises a remarkable degree of control over the play of rich, saturated colour and tonal variations that the technique of fabric dyeing allows. But she has also immeasurably extended its conventional range of subject matter and its compositional possibilities." Aidan Dunne, The Irish Times, (from his introduction to Irish Impressions BASF in Schwarzheide, Germany 2005).

  • Munster artist Pádraig Ó'Mathúna is a self-taught silversmith. As a young student of pharmacy in Dublin Pádraig became absorbed by the wealth of metalwork on display in the National Museum of Ireland. He spent time in the Kildare Street Museum observing and studying the artefacts. “The Museum was my real university but no one knew what I was doing" Pádraig says of this time in his life. In 1952 he devoted himself completely to his art, opening a studio in his native Cashel. Ó'Mathúna undertook some formal study around this time in painting, under John Mulhern at the Galway Art School and also spent four years at the Limerick School of Art. During his time in Limerick Pádraig became acquainted with Benedict Tutty, a well known craftsman of Church metalwork. He spent a week with Tutty in Glenstal Abbey. This time at the Abbey deepened his inquiries in metalwork and into the spiritual dimensions of his art. Ó'Mathúna draws his inspiration from Ireland and its culture, its countryside, people, folklore and language. He was the first Irish metalworker to be invited to take part in the Silver Triennial of European handmade silver in 1980; after this he was invited again in 1983, ‘86 and ‘89. In 1980 he spent some months studying in Germany as a guest of the University Fachhochschule fuer Gestaltung in Schwabisch Gmund, one of the most important art metal schools in Europe.

Donleavy, the writer of literary classics such as The Ginger Man and A Fairy Tale of New York, depicts him at his home in Westmeath, elegantly dressed and framed by symmetrical window shutters. The keen look of sceptical intelligence on the subject's face is centre pointed by the background view, through the window, of flourishing plants, emblems perhaps of the novelist's vigorously fertile imagination."

The Ambidextrous Paradigm (Suite III), whose somewhat tongue-in-cheek title alludes to the so called opposition of functions in the left and right of the human brain, ingeniously and provocatively juxtaposes images such as Einstein's Head, a music sheet by Bach and a nuclear mushroom cloud seen at the end of a series of classical, Piranesian arches.
