A study of Michael Davitt's head by Mayo based sculptor Rory Breslin, for the statue that stands outside the Michael Davitt Museum in Straide, Co. Mayo. Michael Davitt, a founding member of the Irish National Land League was born in Straide, Co. Mayo during the height of the famine. His family was evicted from their and forced to emigrate to Lancashire, England where Davitt began had his arm amputated after an accident working in a mill at the age of 11. Davitt became involved with the Fenian movement in England and later, in the 1870s and 1880s he was instrumental in the enactment of the Irish Land Acts, and becoming a patron of the GAA and an MP. Rory Breslin studied art at the National College of Art and Design and in various parts of Europe. He co-founded the Head Sculpture gallery in Dublin and has had numerous solo drawing and sculpture exhibitions.

  • An extremely interesting letter written and signed in the name of Charles Stewart Parnell by a member of staff. Headed 'Private and Confidential' and sent from Morrison's Hotel Dublin stating that "in view of the proposed change in directorate expected of the Freeman's Journal... steps should be taken to promote an independent national daily paper... a meeting of our leading friends should be held here on Thursday next." With original envelope addressed to Mr. M. DonnellyAt the start of the Parnell split in the I.P.P., the Freeman's Journal came out strongly in favour of Parnell. However the paper defected to the anti-Parnellites and in doing so installed a new board, referred to in this letter. An interesting piece of Parliamentary Party history written at a time when Parnell found himself running out of friends and just a few months before his death.
