  • James Power was a regular exhibitor at the RHA and Oireachtas exhibitions and is best known as a sculptor. His legacies include Brendan Behan's death mask, the 1916 memorial on Sarsfield Bridge, Limerick and the statue of Matt Talbot in Dublin. Power studied under Keating at the National College of Art and Design but later joined his brother and father in their well-known sculpture yard in Phibsborough, Dublin. The present work depicts the first purpose-built shopping centre ever to be opened in Ireland at Stillorgan. Opened in 1966 by Dickie Rock, the construction of the centre was controversial at the time because it involved the destruction of early 19th century cottages which formed part of the old historic town.
