1833: Irish Language Manuscript by Peadar Ó Longáin

Auction Date / Lot No.: 14 September 2013 / 106

Published Estimate: €3000-4000

Price Realised: €6000

  • An original Irish language manuscript written by Peadar Ó Longáin (1801-1861) in 1833, pp460, octavo, original calf. 19th century calf. The title page gives no details of a patron so it therfore possible that Ó Longáin wrote it in the home of selling or bertering it at a later date. The contents include a mix of prose and poetry with approximately 200 pieces titled and some with added notes dating some of them from 16th to 18th centuries, but mostly undated. A complete index survives at the rear of the text. Includes the work of Eoghan Rua Ó Súilleabháin, Seán Clárach Mac Domhnaill, Eoghan an Mhéirin Mac Cartha, Domhnall Ó Colmáin, Tadhg Gaeleach Ó'Súilleabháin, Mícheál Óg Ó Longáin, Domhnall na buile Mac Cárrthaigh and many others. At the end of one of his final entries Ó Longain records his date of completion as 25 February 1833, to which a slightly later note has been added giving some glowing praise of the scribe ! This unique example comes with remarkable provenance and included is a collection of 3 related letters dating to the 1950s from Eibhlín Ní Séaghda in Killarney giving details of items in her possesion and brokering a deal to sell them to Pádraig Ó Siochfhradha. An extremely scarce and desirable item.Provenance: Seághan Ó Séaghdha, Caherciveen; Rebound by John Alphonsus Lyons 21/11/1887 Cahirciveen; Tomas Ó Séaghdha 2/12/1935; Eibhlín Ní Séaghda, Killarney; 'An Seabhac' (Pádraig Ó Siochfhradha, 1883-1964).

circa 1858: Rosewood writing slope presented to James H. Swanton for his work during the famine

Auction Date / Lot No.: 14 September 2013 / 116

Published Estimate: €3000-4000

Price Realised: €3200

  • A remarkable rosewood writing slope by Austin of St Andrews Street, Dublin. Brass cartouche on the lid inscribed Presented to James H. Swanton Esqr. as a mark of regard and esteem from Doctors Donovan, Somerville & Hadden" All three doctors were practising in and around Skibereen, County Cork during the Great Famine of 1846 to 1849 and were among the first to realise the scale and magnitude of the disaster which became known as The Great Irish Famine. Dr. Donovan, in a moment of desperation, wrote to The Times of London bringing to the notice of the world the terrible famine conditions then prevailing in Skibereen; West Cork and all over Ireland between 1846 and 1849. James H(utchinson) Swanton was a substantial landowner of 6000 acres with his home at Rineen, Skibereen. He also had a residence at Carisbrook House, Pembroke Road, Dublin. He provided as much help and sustenance to these Doctors as was possible and this writing slope was presented by them as a mark of regard and esteem in the immediate aftermath of the famine. He provided many buildings which were used as ancillary workhouses of which there were twenty in Skibbereen. One of these buildings featured in various famine correspondence as Swanton's Stores where the destitute were given shelter in a work house like environment. Swanton’s Store was situated at Levis’ Quay, Skibbereen. A.G.Stark who visited Skibbereen towards the end of the famine tells us in his report: “I did not visit any of the poorhouses; indeed, the shrill sound of female voices that reached my ears as I passed Swanton’s Store-as if nothing reigned within, except discord and pain- rendered the invitation to enter anything but desirable.” This presentation piece demonstrates a remarkable example of an ascendancy landlord's attempt to help his fellow countrymen."
