They comprised hand coloured prints and accompanying text by various authors among them W. W. B. Yeats and were published monthly by Elkin Mathews [Vigo Street, London] between 1902 and 1903. Colman Smith collaborated with Yeats during the first year, ending her relationship with the project in January 1903 purportedly because of the immense commitment required to hand colour each sheet. The Broadsheets were unique publications that were complicated and labour intensive to produce and were only available for sale from the artists or the publisher. Complete sets of all 24 of the Broadsheets are quite rare.

  • The image of the nude seated on rocks dates to 1902. It is titled Caino and is the best-known image by the artist. It echoes the post of Hippolyte Flandrin's (1805-1864) Jeune homme nu assis,1855.The initials MG" relate to the Irish author and poet William Monk Gibbon (1896-1987) and the inscription is thought to be an unpublished poem from Gibbon to his wife Mabel Dingwall.von Gloeden was a German photographer who worked mainly in Italy particularly in the area of Taormina in Sicily, where he died in 1931. He known for his pastoral nude studies of Sicilian boys, which usually featured props such as wreaths or amphoras suggesting a setting in the Greece or Italy of antiquity. He exhibited internationally during his lifetime in London, mainland Europe, North Africa and the USA. His landscape photographs were employed to aid tourism in Italy while his images of earthquake damage in Reggio Calabria & Messina in 1908 were important in terms of historical documentation. The majority of von Gloeden's pictures were made before WWI, in the period 1890-1910, before he was forced to leave Sicily to avoid incarceration. In 1933 a major portion of his output was destroyed under Mussolini's government. Most of his surviving work can be found in the Fratelli Alinari photographic archive, Florence and the Civico Archivo Fotographico in Milan. Poem on reverse reads: "To MWD from MG Jan 11th 1926 / "Wise small birds, that with the first warm morning have forgotten winter, and must be praising spring, sing on and pay no heed to those who would for ever be reminding you of past or future; tell them that season, if it is not here, is not far off; and after it comes summer, when the days are long; and after it, though even autumn and the winter should return, surely another spring is not less certain?""

Chariot of Fire pre-dates the artist's iconic copper-bronze, Chariot of Life, which was unveiled on the Irish Life Centre plaza, on Dublin's Lower Abbey Street the year after the artist's death in 1982. The work was a private commission by financier Michael Lucey, responsible for the development of Irish Life Centre. The sizeable work shows the figure of a charioteer said to represents reason controlling the emotions. Kelly's other well-known public sculptures in Dublin include The Children of Lir (1964), in the Garden of Remembrance, Parnell Square and James Larkin on O'Connell Street.
