Label on reverse reads: He married Alice, daughter of Ross Mahon Esqre and of Jane, daughter of John Ussher and had two sons John, died unmarried, Gilbert, married Miss Henry, and three daughters, Mrs King, Lady King and Mrs Daly. " Typed label reads, "original oil painting bought by Hon. Lady Mahon at Ballylin [Co. Offaly] in 1935".Born in Hull to a surgeon father, his talents as an artist were first noticed and employed by his brother-in-law, Dr John Hunter for whom he made anatomical drawings. Through Hunter he was introduced to Angelica Kauffmann RA (1741 -1807) who encouraged his talents. In 1770 and again in 1771 he submitted to the Royal Academy exhibition. Kauffmann's influence resulted in a trip to Rome following which Home returned to London and established himself as a portrait painter. Competition there led him to Dublin in 1779 where he established a large and fashionable practice and married Susanna Delane, daughter of Solomon Delane. Among his commissions in Dublin were eight portraits for Trinity College. Those depicted included Queen Elizabeth, Dean Swift and Henry Grattan (the latter done from life). He returned to London in 1789. He relocated to India the following year, the same year his wife Susanna died. During his time abroad he continued to submit work to the RA. In 1814 he accepted an appointment at the Court of Oude at Lucknow, as Historical and Portrait Painter to the Nawab, Asafud Daula. This resulted in an abundance of commissions. He married again in 1796 to Alice Patterson (d.1817). Home resigned from the role aged 73 years. He died in Cawnpore in 1834. Price Realised: €2000

  • Medium: oil on canvas
  • Dimensions: 24 by 37.5in., 60 by 93.75cm.
  • The present lot is after Pompeo Batoni's Saint Mary Magdalene, which formerly hung in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden (former inventory number, Inv Nr. 454). The original was destroyed in World War II, during three Allied bombing raids of Dresden between 13 and 14 February, 1945.The sheltered grotto scene depicts a recumbent Mary Magdalene, with exposed shoulder and chest; hands clasped reading a book propped up by a human skull. Hints of a mountainous landscape in the distance can be seen in the right middle ground and above centre where the rocks part slightly to shine light on the scene. Batoni was influenced by Raphael and was celebrated for his technique, draughtsmanship and reverence for antiquity. Born in Lucca, Batoni studied in Rome, where he moved in 1727, setting up a studio and home there in Via Bocca di Leone. From 1735 he received numerous commissions for altarpieces, mythological and historical pictures as well as portraits. Papal commissions ensued and he became curator of the Papal collections. He died in Rome. His work can be found in the collection of the Galleria Borghese, Rome, Uffizi, Florence, Musée du Louvre, Paris, Museo del Prado, Madrid and Liechtenstein Museum, Vienna among others. This work is presented in an ornate German gilt trophy frame with a Teutonic Cross lower centre, c.1850s.

  • The exact date and place of birth of Pieter Pietersz. Vromans are not known. We do know that he was the son of the painter Pieter Jansz. Vromans, who moved from Flanders to Holland some time after the fall of Antwerp in 1585. The family of Vromans comprised several painters in Flanders and Delft, including Pieter's brother Abraham, but no paintings have been traced from them except Pieter. In 1635 he became a member of the Guild of St. Luke at Delft. In 1650 he was elected dean of the Guild. He was buried on 10 January 1654 in the Old Church of Delft.Vromans was probably a pupil of Leonaert Bramer (1596-1674) in view of similarities of style and compositions. He specialised in historical and Biblical subjects, and to a limited degree from Greek mythology. He must have been a prolific painter as a large number of his paintings appear in old inventories and sales. Nowadays only about twenty paintings have been preserved with certainty, partly signed P. pr Pr. Vromans. More research should bring other works into light, especially those which are wrongly attributed to painters with a similar style, like Bramer, Jacob Willemsz. de Wet and Adriaen Verdoel. The present picture, dated between 1635 and 1654, is typical of Vromans' usual style and an important example from his oeuvre, a major work because of the vividly demonstrated versatility of his talents for colour, composition and narration. The subject, Christ's entry into Jerusalem (Matthew. 21: 1-11, 14-16; Mark. 11:1-11; Luke. 19:28-40; John. 12:12-19), is a popular subject in the art of the Low Countries in the 16th and 17th centuries. Christ is riding on a colt (foal of a donkey), on which no one has ever yet sat" (Luke 19:30), among a multitude of people rejoicing and praising the Lord.Examples of Pieter Pietersz. Vromans work can be found in the Museums of Aix-la-Chapelle, Göttingen, Münster, Kiev, and St. Petersburg. We are grateful to Drs. Jan Postma, Leiden, The Netherlands, for his assistance in cataloguing this lot and endorsing the attribution based on photographs. Literature:Literature: A.
