  • Kernoff was known for his topographical views of Dublin and he often painted several studies of the same location, some with only very slight differences. The present work is an example of such a view, another example of which was offered in these rooms on 1 October 2012, lot 59 and sold for €11,000. The differences are minor; in the present work there are a smaller number of figures in the foreground but additional details of a man and a horse far left. The same streetscape is depicted, however, in the present work the outline of the distinctive Rinn (later the Regal) Cinema on Fitzwilliam Street, Ringsend can be seen. The building was designed in 1925 by Thomas Francis McNamara and was one of the many suburban cinemas in Dublin at this time. The cinema closed in 1962 but the building remains.

Kennedy, Edward Moore Ted" Kennedy (1932 -2009) was elected to the US Senate in 1962 and became a long serving senator and influential party leader over the course of his life. The present work was created as a fundraiser by Warhol for Kennedy's presidential campaign in 1980, which he lost to Jimmy Carter whom the artist had portrayed four years previously. Here Warhol incorporates the blue and red of the American flag with thin gestural lines of colour. The glamour of politics is suggested by the highlights of diamond dust which add another dimension to the portrait. Ballagh would revisit the theme of Irish landscape painting again in the early 2000s. In Ciaran Carty's text Robert Ballagh, Citizen Artist (2010) the author describes Ballagh's landscapes as, …generic rather than specific, apart from a few references to the Poolnabrone dolmen or the fort at Aileach in Donegal. They lack the aura of time and place that landscape paintings traditionally evoke… their purpose is more elemental. 'My intention was to engage with something more mythical and symbolic than simply the picturesque.' [Ballagh] " (Carty, p.99)"
