  • Hilary Heron was born in Dublin and spent her childhood in New Ross, County Wexford, and Coleraine, County Derry. She was educated privately at home and at Ivory's one-teacher school in New Ross. She attended the National College of Art, Dublin, where she won three Taylor Prizes from the Royal Dublin Society (RDS). For sculpture in wood, limestone and marble she was awarded the first Mainie Jellett Memorial Travelling Scholarship in 1947. In the same year, she went to Italy and France to study Romanesque carving. She was instrumental in founding the Irish Exhibition of Living Art, and first exhibited there in 1943. With Louis Le Brocquy, she represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale in 1956. In 1950 and 1953 she held two solo exhibtions in Dublin at the Waddington Gallery. In the 1950s she began to work in metal. In 1958 she was commissioned by the Irish government to complete work for an Irish exhibit at New York, and in 1960 her first exhibition in England was shown at the Waddington Galleries in London, where she displayed more than thirty works. One English critic saw her work as assimilating exotic styles with a great feel for nature, remarking that ‘she brings something fresh, diverting, and also very genuine to our inbred world of sculpture’ (Neville Wallis, quoted in Snoddy, p. 253). She travelled in Asia, America and Europe, and her works are in many private and public collections, both in Ireland and overseas, including The Irish Museum of Modern Art. SCULPTURE

  • Presented in the original pokerwork frame with Celtic interlaced knot design. A number of French's watercolours were effectively framed by the Arts and Crafts workshop known first as the Belfast School of Poker-Work and then as the Irish Decorative Art Association, run by Eta Lowry and Mina Robinson and their team of women in Belfast. By 1900 specialising in Celtic interlaced pokerwork patterns, their frequently exhibited work showed their application of "the ancient Celtic ornament to all the articles of use and beauty which furnish the modern home". Larmour records that, in 1904, almost all Percy French's paintings were exhibited with pokerwork frames decorated by the Association at its annual summer show in Portrush, Co. Antrim. (See footnote no. 2) Some of these were intricately delineated on the timber frame with competently rhythmic, inventive knotwork, ably balanced on all four sides with modulating triple spirals to denote a change of design in the middle of each side. These small circular devices recall the triskel, one of the main emblems of Celtic triadic paganism, perhaps symbolizing, appropriately, the three realms of land, sea and sky. They may be seen in somewhat fish-like forms, along with small interlaced crosses in the fine frame which French chose to set off the 1902 watercolour he painted to illustrate his immortal words, "Where Ever I go my heart turns back to the County Mayo" (sold by Whyte's in September 2005, lot 66) from the collection of Rupert Guinness, 2nd Earl of Iveagh. In 1883 Moynan attended Academie Royale des Beaux Arts in Antwerp along with Roderic O'Conor and Henry Allen. He studied there until moving to Paris in 1885 to study at Academie Julien. By the late 1880s Moynan had returned to his native Dublin to exhibit his paintings, and was elected to the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1890. This painting and lot 111, Woman and Child, are typical of his 1890s genre works, which often included his daughter Bridget as a model. It was around this time that Moynan produced some of his masterpieces including Military Manoeuveres and Tug of War. ANTIQUE

  • In their original early 19th century frames. Sir William Wallace (Gaelic: Uilleam Uallas; Norman French: William le Waleys;(died 23 August 1305) was a Scottish knight who became one of the main leaders during the Wars of Scottish Independence. Along with Andrew Moray, Wallace defeated an English army at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in September 1297. He was appointed Guardian of Scotland and served until his defeat at the Battle of Falkirk in July 1298. In August 1305, Wallace was captured in Robroyston, near Glasgow, and handed over to King Edward I of England, who had him hanged, drawn, and quartered for high treason and crimes against English civilians. Since his death, Wallace has obtained an iconic status far beyond his homeland. He is the protagonist of Blind Harry's 15th-century epic poem The Wallace and the subject of literary works by Sir Walter Scott and Jane Porter, and of the Academy Award-winning film Braveheart (1995).
