  • Resting is a beautifully balanced painting that brings together O'Neill's two great passions, landscape and women. The mood is typically quiet with a subtle sense of disconnect between the subject and the viewer, as she gazes off into the distance. The waters barely break a wave on the shore and give an air of peace and tranquillity to the scene. The palette is a harmony of blues and greys warmed by flesh and earthy tones favoured by the artist. This finish is textured with impasto adding another dimension to the work. Although exhibition records for Resting have not been traced, its size and presentation - in a Dawson Gallery frame - would suggest it must have been included in a significant exhibition at some stage. • Literature: Ferran, Brian, Basil Blackshaw - Painter, Nicholson & Bass Ltd., Belfast, 1995, p. 44 (illustrated in colour)
  • The Orchard forms part of a series of intense landscapes, half way between neo-Romanticism and Expressionism, that Basil Blackshaw painted in the mid 1950s; this series could arguably be seen as his first mature body of work after leaving Belfast College of Art. It has a more lyrical mood than some of the darker landscapes of this time. Many of the works of this period appear to be drawn from a specific place and motif, sometimes noted in the title, but they create such a strong sense of mood and of powerful natural forces at work that they transcend their particular local identity and take on a more universal quality. It is intriguing to see in the present painting Blackshaw's apparent awareness of a British contemporary, Alan Reynolds, whose tensely evocative paintings of gardens and farmlands eventually moved into pure abstraction. The twisted, interwoven branches of the trees that dominate the foreground here establish an abstract rhythm and pattern that goes beyond description to create an almost flat, two-dimensional surface that could also be connected with post-war gestural painting in Europe and the USA. The buildings in the distance provide a geometric framework that is dominated by three triangles. This appears to be the same architectural arrangement that is included in a more clearly defined form in Blackshaw's 1957 painting November Cottage. Buildings are often integrated within the landscapes he painted in this period, providing an architectural structure that Blackshaw was to begin to find within the landscape itself in the long series of paintings of Colin Mountain that he embarked on around this time. Price Realised: €6800

  • Signature: numbered [104] in red on reverse; with the remains of a portrait on reverse

  • Literature: 'Patrick Swift 1927-1983', Irish Museum of Modern Art, Dublin, 1993, no. 43 (illustrated p.72)
  • The exhibition catalogue for the 1993 retrospective situates the present work in the artist's London period from 1955-1962 and notes: Painted in his later sketchy style, this still-life gives a suggestion of light shining in from a window. Swift does not usually attempt to represent the effects of light and shade in a realistic manner, in fact his earlier paintings show his use of light in an arbitrary manner to create particular effects. • This painting was inspired by the poem To An Isle In The Water by William Butler Yeats, written in 1889: Shy one, shy one, Shy one of my heart, She moves in the firelight Pensively apart. She carries in the dishes, And lays them in a row. To an isle in the water With her would I go. She carries in the candles, And lights the curtained room, Shy in the doorway And shy in the gloom; And shy as a rabbit, Helpful and shy. To an isle in the water With her would I fly. ABSTRACT

  • Tony O'Malley's work came to the attention of art lovers in Ireland comparatively late in the artist's life. He spent the 1960s painting in Cornwall, absorbing the prevailing aesthetic of abstraction to his own ends. He did exhibit, but much work remained unsold. His creative harvest from the 1970s was magnificent. Marriage to Jane Harris in 1973 led to winters in the Bahamas, where he began painting outdoors on canvas. Sales however remained sporadic. O'Malley's life changed when Northern artists, F. E. Mc William and William Scott, introduced him to Belfast dealer, gallerist and collector, George McClelland in 1979 or 80. In the few but effective years during which he promoted O'Malley's work, George himself acquired a number of fine works. Some were loaned to the Irish Museum of Modern Art and later donated. (1) Others stayed in the family until now. Intimate and reflective, many of the works by O'Malley from the McClelland collection are of museum quality. Vera Ryan 1. • Crozier was born in Glasgow to Irish parents and educated at the Glasgow School of Art between 1949 and 1953. On graduating he spent time in Paris and Dublin before settling in London, where he gained a reputation as an important young British artist through the early success and notoriety of his exhibitions of assemblages and paintings at the ICA, Drian and the Arthur Tooth galleries, with whom he had a long association. Profoundly affected by post-war existential philosophy, Crozier allied himself and his work consciously with contemporary European art throughout the 1950s and 1960s, rather than with the New York abstractionists, who were more fashionable in the UK at the time. He was also part of the artistic and literary world of 1950s Soho, a close associate of 'the Roberts', Colquhoun and MacBryde, John Minton and William Scott, and part of the expatriate middle-European and Irish intellectual circles in London of the time. Crozier spent 1963 in southern Spain with the Irish poet Anthony Cronin; this proved pivotal to Crozier's development as an artist. On his return to the UK, he began a series of skeletal paintings which anticipated the 'New Expressionist' German painters of the 1980s, and which were influenced by Crozier's visit in 1969 to Auschwitz and Belsen. Based in London throughout the 1960s and 1970s, Crozier exhibited his works in London, Glasgow, Dublin and all over Europe. Crozier spent much of 1960s and 1970s teaching. He became a citizen of Ireland in 1973 and started spending more time in Ireland. From the 1980s, Crozier's painting blossomed with a new freedom and confidence, the result of his giving up teaching and the stimulus provided by his studios in West Cork in Ireland, and in Hampshire in England. His abstract landscapes and still life painting used sumptuous colour to convey an emotional intensity. To the end of his life, he was endlessly concerned with the challenge of creating a new language in figurative painting. William Crozier represented Britain and Ireland at overseas exhibitions, and was awarded the Premio Lissone in Milan in 1958 and the Oireachtas Gold medal for Painting in Dublin in 1994. In 1991 the Crawford Art Gallery Cork and the Royal Hibernian Academy curated a retrospective of his work. He was elected to Aosdána in 1992 and was elected an honorary member of the Royal Hibernian Academy. In 2005 Crozier celebrated his 75th birthday with a major exhibition in Cork to celebrate the European Capital of Culture. He celebrated his 80th year with a large exhibition of his current work at the Flowers Galleries. A concurrent exhibition of his painting of the 1950s and 60s was shown at the Pyms Gallery, London, which triggered a reappraisal of his early painting. Acquisitions of his work by the Tate Gallery and the National Gallery of Ireland quickly followed. ABSTRACT

  • Sheet size 31 by 29.5ins.The tangram is a dissection puzzle consisting of seven flat shapes, called tans, which are put together to form shapes. These puzzles have been the object of interest for artists and designers who have used the principles of the game to sharpen the powers of observation through the discovery of resemblances between geometric and natural forms and as a tool for abstraction. The tangram is thought to have been invented in China during the Song Dynasty and later introduced to Europe by trading ships in the early 19th century. ABSTRACT
