    The Honourable The Irish Society, is a consortium of livery companies of the City of London set up in 1613 to colonise County Londonderry during the Plantation of Ulster. It was incorporated by royal charter of James I and consists of "six and twenty honest and discreet citizens of London" nominated by the livery companies. In its first decades it rebuilt the city of Derry and town of Coleraine, and for centuries it owned property and fishing rights near both towns. Some of the society's profits were used to develop the economy and infrastructure of the area, while some was returned to the London investors, and some used for charitable work.

  • A low-relief portrait of Padraig Pearse on a limestone slab by Redmond Herrity, one of three carved by the artist.
    Donegal sculptor Redmond Herrity was inspired by street sculptors in India to begin working in three dimensions. On trip to Australia worked with stone for the first time and he is now best known for his work in that medium. He graduated from Leitrim Sculpture Centre in Ireland in 2001 and went on to work in Carrara, Italy, where he began learning the techniques of classical marble portraiture. His large scale public works include: Celtic Cross (2006), Cathedral Square, Letterkenny, Co. Donegal; Errigal College (2007), Letterkenny, Co.     Joseph Arthur Comte de Gobineau (1816-1882) is today most remembered for developing the theory of the Aryan master race and helping to legitimise racism by scientific racist theory and racial demography. Roger Casement (1964-1916) is described as the "father of twentieth-century human rights investigations", he was honoured in 1905 for the Casement Report on the Congo and knighted in 1911 for his important investigations of human rights abuses in Peru.
