  • Royal Irish Constabulary helmet, blue cloth with black fittings of pattern unique to the RIC, helmet inscribed to the interior 'Con, Primrose' and 'JP 60943'
    James Primrose, a native of Co. Fermanagh was recommended for recruitment by Head Constable McKinney. He was appointed on 1 September 1902 age 20 years. His first posting was to Galway (east Riding) on 14 March 1903. Promoted to Sergeant and posted to Armagh 1 January 1921.

  • An intriguing group of medals with a 1916-66 'Survivor's' medal, awarded to recipients of the 1916 Rising Service Medal who were still alive in 1966, a Chevalier de l'Ordre National du Merite (French National Order of Merit) and a Glasgow Corporation Bravery Medal inscribed to Michael McGaleagly, 1945 with a letter from City of Glasgow Police commending Michael McGaleagly for his rescue of children from a burning house. Michael's father, James McGaleagly (1890-1924) served in the GPO during the 1916 Rising; his mother applied for a pension, claiming membership of Cuman na mBan from 1916 which was refused but she was awarded a 1917-21 Service Medal. An uncle, John McGallogly, a brother of James Galeagly, also fought in the 1916 Rising. Worth further research.

Manufactured at the Torre Annunziata arsenal in 1881, converted to a four shot repeating rifle in 1890 at the Terni arsenal as indicated by a cartouche on the right side of the butt stock. The Vetterli rifle, named after its Swiss designer, Friedrich Vetterli, was adopted by the Swiss army in 1868 and later by the Italian military. Large numbers of these weapons made their way into Ireland in 1914, including 4,600 which were imported during the Larne gun-running by the Ulster Volunteer Force. Some were also acquired and used by the Irish Volunteers during the 1916 Rising and the War of Independence but few have survived today.

  • A cast bronze plaque with gilt lettering, headed 'Eiri amach na Casca 1916' and marking the location of one of the outposts of the First Battalion, Dublin Brigade. Probably taken from a demolished building in Dublin.
    The 1st battalion, under Edward 'Ned' Daly, occupied the Four Courts and surrounding buildings, while a company under Seán Heuston occupied the Mendicity Institution, across the River Liffey. The outposts in this area were chosen to protect the Four Courts which was subject to some of the most savage fighting between the Volunteers and the British Army.

    The bond was to bear 5% interest per annum "from the first day of the seventh month after the freeing of the territory of the Republic of Ireland from Britain's military control". Controversy arose after de Valera refused to hand over the funds to the Provisional Government; a compromise was reached and much of the funds went to found the Irish Press newspaper, effectively under the controlling ownership of the de Valera family.

    Sean 'Jack' McNeela was born in Ballycoy, Co. Mayo. He was imprisoned for two years for operating a pirate radio station for Sinn Fein. In a protest over the sending of a political prisoner to Mountjoy he went on a 55 day hunger strike and died on 19 April 1940. The badge is accompanied by extensive notes from archives.
