  • Hand coloured memorial leaflet, 2 pp (folded sheet), with wreath and initial by Elizabeth Corbet Yeats and with hand-lettered extracts of poetry in Irish and English, over the lines ‘Michael O’Callaghan / murdered by the enemy March 7th 1921’. Printed for O’Callaghan’s widow, a poignant and attractive item. Rare; Miller (p. 128) gives the edition as 100 copies. Fine copy. Michael O’Callaghan was one of three leading Limerick citizens murdered in one night, in their own homes during curfew hours. No inquest was held, and it was generally believed the killers were members of the police.

Ireland has one enemy, the infamous English enemy." Makes reference to numerous famous figures of the War of Independence, Civil War and the British Government.

1923 (12 October) W T Cosgrave printed letter regarding the employment of demobilised National Army soldiers

  • Single page printed circular letter to employers appealing to them to reinstate demobilised soldiers who left their employment to join the National Army during the Civil War. Also with accompanying printed letter from Patrick Hogan Minister for Agriculture and unused employment undertaking form, an early Irish Army recruitment pamphlet and unused headed paper of the army benevolent fund employment committee. An interesting collection relating to the employment of ex-soldiers in post Civil War Ireland. Those who fought on the Anti-Treaty side did not get the same support until De Valera and Fianna Fáil gained power in 1932. This was the start of “jobbery” which was to be a feature of Irish politics ever since. (5 items)

  • An album with about 25 original hand-drawn cartoons, 1920s, mostly pen-and-ink with a few coloured, well-drawn, mostly relating to British or international politics, one showing ‘Johnny Turk’ defying the League of Nations; another shows Winston Churchill sharing out his budget among the armed forces, 1925; more than 20 others, some unfinished. In a quarto clothbound album with numbered pages (some removed), signed James Barry 1920. Probably intended for newspaper use. The artist’s name, and one of the coloured cartoons towards end, suggest a possible Irish connection.

Seán Milroy unsuccessfully contested the Cavan constituency during the 1927 General Election as an independent candidate after leaving Cumann na nGaedheal. He was later elected to Seanad Éireann.
