  • In original Victor Waddington frame. With Lismehane, Co. Clare address on reverse. The O'Callaghan-Westropp family lived in the 18th Century Maryfort Estate (also known as Lismehane House) in the barony of Tulla Upper, County Clare in the early 19th Century. It is recorded in Griffith's Valuation as being occupied by John O'Callaghan, valued at £35 and held from George Westropp. In the 20th century it was the home of his son Colonel George O'Callaghan who assumed the additional name of Westropp. The house was demolished in 1967 by Colonel Conor J. O'Callaghan Westropp, the last member of the family to live there. Images of the artist, Rosemary and her sister Henrietta, daughter to (Col. George and sister to Col. Conor) riding their family horses can be found in the collection of Clare County Library. Rosemary is mentioned in Burke's Irish Family Records as having painted the great jockey Pat Taafe on that most loved of Irish racehorses, Arkle. She is also recorded as exhibiting eleven works, mainly equestrian, with the Watercolour Society from 1937-1940.

  • A concise biography of the artist is affixed to the reverse of the work, reads: Genre and landscape painter in oil and watercolour. Born on 21st August 1855 in London. For three years he was apprenticed to O’Connor’s the glass painters, of Berners Street, London. First studied painting under William Bromley, and later in Paris under Bonnat and Cormon. Exhibited at RA from 1876. Elected RBA 1879 and RI 1886. Represented in several public collections. Lived in London where he died on 10th June 1924.

  • Nathaniel Everett Green was a Bristol born artist who married an Elizabeth Goold of Cork in 1847. They settled in St. John's Wood, London. He exhibited frequently in oil and watercolour at the Royal Academy among other galleries. His large family led him to the teaching profession where his reputation led him to Balmoral in 1880 where Her Majesty the Queen, the Princess of Wales and Princess Beatrice were among his pupils. Green was a founding member of the British Astronomical Association (BAA). He built a telescope in 1859 and produced drawings of Mars in 1877. A crater on the planet is named in his honour.
