  • An excellent and scarce later 19th Century South African double barrelled percussion 12 bore sporting shotgun. The barrel engraved with maker's mark "J. F. King. Gunmaker, Durban" Walnut stock with chequered grip. With an interesting provenance showing that the gun was originally purchased by Daniel Nielsen of Norway who emigrated to Natal in 1860 where he worked for the Norwegian Missionary Society. The gun was kept in the same house until 1977 when the home was destroyed by fire. The gun being one of the few items to survive, doing so in remarkable condition. With accompanying paperwork including a Mercury Reporter newspaper article relating to the arson incident and mentioning the gun. Provenance: Mr. Daniel Nielsen of Natal; thence by descent. Note: Purchaser must produce a valid license for this gun

  • An extremely desirable original late war officers tunic with South Irish Horse buttons by Henecy & Son of Dublin, overseas service stripes to cuff and attached medal ribbons of the Queen's South Africa Medal, 1914-15 Star and The Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem. Also with original attributing documents, Edward VII commission certificate promoting Frederick Faber MacCabe as a Surgeon Lieutenant on 14 September 1903 in the South of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry. Trinity College Latin vellum medical degree of MacCabe. 1937 South Irish Horse London reunion dinner menu with name of MacCabe noted and a pair of brass spurs. (5 items)Frederick Faber MacCabe was born in Waterford in 1868. He served as a civilian surgeon during the Boer War and was commissioned as medical officer to the South of Ireland Imperial Yeomanry in 1903. A man of many talents he also worked as a horse trainer at Glencairn House, Sandyford, Dublin and trained the famous horse Orby, owned by Richard Croker, to become the first Irish trained winner of the Epsom Derby. During the First World War he served as medical officer for the South Irish Horse on the Western Front from June 1915, being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel by 1918. He died in 1954.

  • An interesting pair of signed typescript letters on Pearson's Magazine letterhead with original envelope both sent to Louise Bryant. The first to Bryant herself and enclosing a "letter of introduction to Shaw" who Harris explains will "tell you all the persons to meet and his introduction will be more valuable than mine". The second is the aforementioned introduction letter from Harris to Shaw explaining that Bryant is the wife of John Reed "who has done such good work for us here in telling the truth about the Russian revolutionaries" and that "she is now going to England and Ireland as I understand, to get the true view of things and I do not think anybody can help her better than you." Also with an original small photograph of Bryant, possibly intended tor use on a passport. (3 items)
