  • A wonderful collection of handmade dolls in a traditional Kerry kitchen setting, comprising five figures, two chairs and a dresser filled with crockery. Frances and Lily Whelan were the elder sisters of artist Leo Whelan and lived with him at the family home (which doubled as a hotel) at 65 Eccles Street, Dublin. The Whelan sisters were artists in their own right and designed among other items; dolls, puppets, miniature costumes, cushions, quilting, fire-screens, table lamps, shades and mirrors. Their craftwork was the subject of a very well received exhibition at the United Arts Club, 3 Upper Fitzwilliam St., Dublin in June 1958 where among the items shown was this collectiion. The show's success is recorded in newspaper cuttings and was described as an outstanding exhibition of really fine craftsmanship (Evening Main, 28 June 1958) and "A delightful exhibition of works" (Irish Independent, 28 June 1958).   • A 4pp manuscript signed letter dated 8 December 1965 on headed paper by Sarah Gertrude Millin. Content relating to the death of her brother, her hopes of writing a book dedicated to him called 'Goodbye Dear England' and stating that ...I have seen as much as the world as I need to and and I am not prepared to visit England again while she goes on tormenting South Africa and still more Rhodesia over race policies. Chinese are undermining every part of Africa. Africa for the Africans means not only the elimination of all whites, it means also Africa for the Chinese..." Also with a copy of Millin's autobiography 'The Measure of my Days". Sarah Gertrude Millin (1889-1968), was a South African-born writer. In her lifetime, she was one of the most popular English-language novelists in South Africa. She also wrote biographies of Cecil Rhodes and General Jan Smuts."

Large light blue plexiglass box (16 x 12in approx), with 3 drawers containing 104pp text by Butor in French, 20 signed silkscreens by Monory, many objects of American ephemera, many encased in plastic, also loose booklets and other evocative American memorabilia. Specially published to celebrate the bicentenary of American Independence as seen in the eyes of a Frenchman. It is in the tradition of De Tocquevillle, Chateaubriand, or Duchamp.

  • A small memorial colour memorial poster produced in memory of those killed in the Edentubber explosion in 1957. On Monday 11 November 1957, five republicans were killed in an explosion which demolished a small cottage at the foot of Edentubber Mountain in County Louth. Four Thompson sub-machine guns and ammunition were found among the wreckage. The Newry Frontier Sentinel reported: The finding of a machine gun strapped to a bicycle led to the belief that the men were starting out on an expedition when a land mine they were handling exploded." The five men killed in the explosion were Michael Watters, Patrick Parle, Paul Smith, George Keegan and Oliver Craven."

Her Majesty's Prison Maze (known colloquially as Maze Prison, The Maze, The H Blocks or Long Kesh) was a prison in Northern Ireland that was used to house paramilitary prisoners from mid-1971 to mid-2000.   • The sword with 31 inch straight steel blade, 1.5 inches tapering gradually to .5 inch, fluted towards the leather covered hilt, with conical brass top, in maroon leather scabbard. The dagger with 8 inch curved polished steel blade, decorated on hilt with two white metal circular badges with a design imitated from a Venetian ducat of the 13th century inscription SITT XPEDATOT RECISTE DUC. See British Museum reference 2009,4007.545, American Numismatic Society 1954.237.509. In wooden sheath covered in coloured twine attached to cloth belt decorated extensively in silver bullion. (2)

  • An excellent and scarce later 19th Century South African double barrelled percussion 12 bore sporting shotgun. The barrel engraved with maker's mark J. F. King. Gunmaker, Durban" Walnut stock with chequered grip.With an interesting provenance showing that the gun was originally purchased by Daniel Nielsen of Norway who emigrated to Natal in 1860 where he worked for the Norwegian Missionary Society. The gun was kept in the same house until 1977 when the home was destroyed by fire. The gun being one of the few items to survive, doing so in remarkable condition. With accompanying paperwork including a Mercury Reporter newspaper article relating to the arson incident and mentioning the gun.Provenance: Mr. Daniel Nielsen of Natal; thence by descent. Note: Purchaser must produce a valid license for this gun"

  • A request for a musical arrangement from M. Artur. Clément Philibert Léo Delibes was a French composer of ballets, operas, and other works for the stage. His most notable works include ballets Coppélia (1870) and Sylvia (1876) as well as the operas Le Roi l'a Dit (1873) and Lakmé (1883). Some musicologists believe that the ballet in Gounod's Faust was actually composed by Delibes. He died in Paris from natural causes on 16 January 1891, at the age of 54. He was buried in the Cimetière de Montmartre in Paris.Provenance: Art et Autographes, Paris.
