Notes:Armstrong made repeated trips to Spain throughout his life, often staying with his good friend George Campbell. The pump seen through the open doorway in this work is quite likely the same one that was painted on a number of occasions by Campbell, seen for instance in Still Life with Old Pump, Palo (sold through these rooms, 19 February 2002, lot 54).

Notes:Accompanied by a limited edition copy of Bewick’s The Yellow Man, Wolfhound Press, Dublin, 1995. Fifty copies of the limited edition were issued, each specially bound in linen-covered boards with a yellow cloth covered slipcase stamped in gilt and blind, and each with an original watercolour loosely inserted. This was no. 15 in the edition, and has been inscribed by the artist on one of the preliminary pages of the book, and numbered on the spine of both the book and its slipcase and in the upper left hand corner of the (now framed) watercolour.
