|
| GOOD EVENING, 1982 |
| oil on canvas |
| signed and dated on reverse |
| 81 by 81cm., 32 by 32in. |
| Provenance: |
| Exhibited: 'Martin Gale: Family and Friends', Arts Council / An Chomhairle Ealaion exhibition which toured regional art centres, February - August 1982, catalogue no. 12, lent by the artist |
| Literature: Niall Fallon, Fine Arts and Antiques column, The Irish Times, 21 September 1991, reproduced |
| Notes:Mystery and intrigue are the hallmark of Martin Gale’s paintings and one can never be impassive in front them. Always the artist delights in posing as many questions as answers in his pictures, for in them things are never quite what they appear to be. Good Evening, a relatively youthful work, is a prime example of this. What is happening? As we look out of the window are we literally observing a ‘good evening’, the close of a fine day, or are we looking at the house beyond prepared, perhaps, to bid welcome to visitors? All is pristine in the cosy interior of the room in which we, as spectators, stand. The warmth of the softly textured and highly patterned curtain contrasts with the coolness of the exterior which, despite the warm, welcoming lights of the house opposite, is dominated by the ink-black, inhospitable tracery of the leafless winter trees which occupy the middle distance and so act as a barrier between us and the neighbourhood house which is the ostensible subject of the composition. The title of the exhibition in which this picture was first exhibited, ‘Martin Gale: Family and Friends’, suggests that it is autobiographical, but of this one cannot be certain.
In the strident colours and the sharply defined forms and shapes of the window frame and the branches of the trees beyond, the influences of Pop Art and Hard Edge painting, which held sway on Gale in his early days as an artist, are clear and the sense of tranquillity mixed with unease, which is all-pervasive, is characteristic of his oeuvre in general.
