| TINKER CHILD BENEATH A LIGHT BULB, circa 1952-54 |
| signed upper left; inscribed by present owner on reverse; with le Brocquy's Albert Studios (established, spring 1952) business card displayed in the mount; inscribed on reverse "Bought in Folio 60s (late), Westbourn Park" |
| ink and collage with gouache on paper |
| 47 by 40cm., 18.5 by 15.7 5in. |
| Provenance: Purchased by the present owner in the 1960s in Westbourne Park, London; Private collection |
| Exhibited: |
| Literature: |
| Notes:This understated work by le Brocquy is reminiscent of the artist’s Tinker Period circa 1945 to 1948 as well as indicative of aspects of his Grey Period which spanned the early years of the 1950s. The child figure is recurrent in le Brocquy’s oeuvre during this period and the little girl in particular recalls the figures from several other works from that period such as, Fairground Under Bray Head (1949), A Family (1951) and Caroline (1956).
The diminutive Caroline which was first displayed in 1957 was described by John Montague as, "...Aristotelean in its premise that the eyes are the gateway to the soul, save that here the whole indistinct face provides that gateway." This work calls to mind the innocence and openness Montague described. The inclusion of the light bulb and the naive style in which the work is depicted is evocative of Picasso’s Guernica (1937) which employed the same object to illuminate the subjects of the work and to complement the angular composition of the work as le Brocquy has done here.
With thanks to Pierre le Brocquy for his assistance in cataloguing this work. |

|

| 152 by 104cm., 60 by 41in. |
| Provenance: Purdy Hicks Gallery, London; Private collection |
| Exhibited: Green on Red Gallery, Dublin, 2007; Purdy Hicks Gallery, London, 2007; 'Natural Artifice', Brighton and Hove Museum; Djanogly Art Centre, Nottingham, 2007; 'Alice Maher: The Night Garden', RHA Gallgher Gallery, Dublin, 14 September - 28 October 2007 |
| Literature: |
| Notes:Lovers is an emblematic work from Maher’s ‘Night Garden series’ which draws inspiration from the intricately detailed masterpiece, The Garden of Earthly Delights, 1503-1504 by Hieronymus Bosch. It is a fitting source of inspiration for Alice Maher whose work is rooted in folklore and fairy tales as well as medieval and cultural history. Similar to the Dutch artist’s triptych, which is rich with enchanted scenes of carnal desire, Maher’s ‘Night Garden’ works explore and question the perils of life’s temptations through the medium of charcoal and pencil embodied in the profiles of what she calls ‘bestiary’. These ‘bestiary’ figures are fusions of human, animal, bird and fruit combinations as depicted by Bosch in his interpretation of the Fall of Mankind. Maher then embellishes the negative spaces created by these creatures with decorative patterns and motifs ranging from such diverse sources as eighteenth century wallpaper to Pompeian panels and contemporary headscarves.
The fragility of these ‘beasts’ is reinforced by the artist’s choice of medium; the delicate charcoal dust.
The Night Garden Drawings continue to influence Maher’s work and have provided her with fertile material for her forthcoming solo exhibition entitled, ‘The Music of Things’, which will take place in the Green on Red Gallery, Dublin, 12 November to 23 December, 2009. This new body of work will comprise “film drawings” (a new departure for Maher), limited edition prints and two sculptural works. |

| 48 by 48cm., 19 by 19in. |
| Provenance: Rubicon Gallery, Dublin; Private collection |
| Exhibited: 'The Palm House', Rubicon Gallery, Dublin, 2001 |
| Literature: |
| Notes:This series of ‘Palm House’ photographs were based on Stein's residency in the Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin in 2001. They capture the time period prior to restoration work on the building which was carried out two years later. In these images Stein captures the raw and worn fabric of the edifice and its relationship with its subjects, the plants. These works formed the basis of her solo exhibition in the Rubicon Gallery in 2001. The themes of time, degeneration and loss frequently return as dominant subjects in Stein's work. She followed this 'Palm House' exhibition with 'Memory + Loss' in 2002 which explored the lives of her late parents. In 2003 the RHA elected Stein a member of the Academy. She is the first photographer to have achieved this status in Ireland. |

| Exhibited: 'Gerard Byrne: Theatre Bunker Archive Reception Area' Green on Red Gallery, Dublin, 9 September - 9 October, 1999, catalogue no. 5 |
| Literature: |
| Notes:Gerard Byrne is a visual artist working with photography, video, and installations. In his 1999 ‘Theatre - Bunker - Archives - Reception Area’ exhibition Byrne’s cryptic photography presents the viewer with a series of banal and impenetrable environments which he chooses to leave unexplained to his audience. All the works in this exhibition were made in New York where the artist was living that year and were shot at night from the outdoors looking indoors on spaces which were unfamiliar and out of the control of the artist. The space depicted by Byrne holds only hints at the function of the corporate space giving the viewer a sense of remote isolation akin to the artist's during the creation process. Although unsettling in nature, the overall composition and subject serves to intrigue the viewer and in Byrne's words,
"...turn the most everyday of architectural interiors into dramatically "noirish" places. In a darkly comic manner, each photograph resembles a crime scene. This uncanny quality is emphasised in the impossible angles, and the ghostly reflections that inexplicable float across the photographs."
In 2007 Byrne represented Ireland at the Venice Biennale. |

| Notes:In this robust work by O'Reilly we see the artist combine the discipline of sculpture with the conventional presentation of a painting. These unlikely fusions as well as the atypical choice of medium aptly encapsulate the artist and his work. O'Reilly frequently presents difficulties to those attempting to interpret and indeed categorise his art. Brian Fallon acknowledges this and has commented, "...Where to fit him, and how to describe or label him? As an installationist that among other things...O'Reilly is as eruptive, inventive and anarchic in his small pieces as in his large ones. He is perfectly at home in his wide variations of scale and has even constructed a street sculpture in Dublin which he calls the Rockets and which towers to fifty feet high. However it would be an injustice to regard him as essentially a virtuoso of startling effects and quick-fire technical invention; there is an underlying note of social compassion and an identification with the lonely, the misfits and the unwanted ones of society."
In 2006, when this work was executed, O'Reilly won the Royal Hibernian Academy Sculpture Prize. |
