FIGURES IN A LANDSCAPE

oil on canvas
69 by 89cm., 27 by 35in.

William Ashford’s role in Irish landscape painting cannot be understated; he enjoyed a reputation as the premier landscapist of his day, rivalled only by the painter Thomas Roberts. Born in Birmingham in 1746, he moved to Ireland in 1764 having been appointed to the Ordnance Office in Dublin Castle. Within three years he was exhibiting with the Society of Artists in William Street, continuing to do so until 1780. After a short period in London (1789-1790) he exhibited at various venues in Dublin and held a successful one-man show in the Dublin Society’s House in February 1819. He produced a large body of work, much of which was subsequently engraved for books and periodicals. Elected President of the Irish Society of Artists in 1813, he was also a founding member of the RHA and in 1823 became its first elected President.

Born in Lurgan, Co. Armagh, George William Russell moved with his family to Dublin in 1878. He began to paint as a youth when on holiday in the North of Ireland. Among his friends at the Metropolitan were George Moore and W. B. Yeats, who encouraged him to write and to join the Theosophical Society. W.B. Yeats said of Russell: "he was a mystic of medieval type who didn’t draw from model as we tried to do, for some other image always rose before his eyes". In 1905 he exhibited at the RHA and in 1907-10 he was involved in four exhibitions at the Leinster Lecture Hall, one of them including no less than 63 of his works. In 1922 he showed three works in the Irish Exhibition at Galleries Barbazanges, Paris. He gave lecture tours in the USA and received an honorary degree at Yale university in 1928. More than a dozen of his works are in the Armagh County Museum. The National Gallery of Ireland has five of his portraits.

Provenance:
The Bell Gallery, Belfast

Conor was initially trained as a commercial artist, studying in the 1890s at the Government School Of Design. He exhibited at the Belfast Art Society in 1910. During the First World War he was appointed by the British government to produce official records of soldiers and munitions workers. He exhibited at the RA in 1921 and at the RHA from 1918-1967, showing nearly 200 works. Conor was one of the first Academicians when the Belfast Art Society became the Ulster Academy of Arts in 1930. He became an Associate RHA in 1938 and a full member in 1946. He exhibited at the Victor Waddington Galleries in 1944 and 1948. In 1952 he was awarded the OBE and in 1957 he was elected President of the RUA and held office until 1964. More than 50 of his works are in the permanent collections of the Ulster Museum.

Conor was fascinated by horses and horse racing. He learnt about the animal’s anatomy by visiting Johnson’s Horse Repository in University Road, Belfast and visiting race meetings, which inspired works such as The Horse Parade
which sold earlier this year at £36,000 sterling at Sotheby’s. The superb interpretation of the horses’ movement makes this present work equally outstanding, and is one of the artist’s finest pictures of the "Sport of Kings".

TRAWLERS OFF DALKEY ISLAND
signed lower right and dated (1854)
oil on canvas
27 by 41cm., 10.5 by 16in.

Edward Hayes spent his youth in Dublin and was a student in the Dublin Society’s Schools. From the very first he wanted to be a marine painter, and living close to the quays and docks helped him in this. In 1842 he exhibited at the RHA and in 1855 exhibited at the RA where he was a regular contributor for forty-nine years. He exhibited also at the Society of British Artists and at The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. He became an Associate in 1860 and a Member in 1863 of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. He continued to contribute to the RHA and was elected an Associate in 1853 and a member in 1871.
This wonderful example of his dramatic seascapes shows the fishermen trawling off the northeast of Dalkey Island. They probably set out from nearby Coliemore or Bulloch harbours. In the background is the distinctive obelisk on Victoria Hill, Killiney.

The two views of Simmon’s Court are by Beranger; the two others are by Seymour.

Gabriel Beranger was a Rotterdam-born Huguenot who came to Dublin with his family in 1750. He exhibited at the Society of Artists (Ireland) from 1765-1768, and in 1773 made the first of his antiquarian tours through Ireland. William Burton Conyngham, the first President of the Antiquarian Society, employed Beranger to make plans and drawings of antiquities for the society. To this purpose, Beranger made a tour through the West of Ireland in 1779, keeping an itinerary illustrated with sketches which he later arranged for publication in bound volumes. One such volume, entitled A Collection Of Drawings Of The Principle Antique Buildings Of Ireland designed on the spot and collected by Gabriel Beranger is housed in the Royal Irish Academy

SPECIAL FEATURE

J. P. Donleavy (b. 1926)

Born in New York City of Irish parents, James Patrick Donleavy served in the US Navy during World War II. He came to Dublin after the war on the GI Bill of Rights programme and studied macrobiology at Trinity College. Among his many friends were writers Patrick Kavanagh and Brendan Behan and painter Ralph Cusack. Attracting contraversy as a painter he in the Stephen’s Green Gallery in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Jack Yeats commented favourably on his work, especially on his oil painting technique. It was as a writer that he was to find international fame and his first novel, The Ginger Man (1955) was hailed as a comic masterpiece. Among his other works are A Singular Man (1963), The Beastly Beatitudes of Balthazar B (1968), The Onion Eaters (1971), Leila (1983), Are You Listening, Rabbi Low? (1987) and That Darcy, That Dancer, That Gentleman (1990). His most recent and most successful novel is The Lady Who Liked Clean Rest Rooms, soon to be made into a film. He became an Irish citizen in 1967 and lives in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath where he writes, paints and farms.
While writing became his career his painting took a back seat but he has returned to it many times over the past fifty years, often providing illustrations for his books or for articles written in magazines such as The New Yorker. He exhibited at the Tom Caldwell Gallery in the 1980s and had a joint exhibition in 1990 in London with his daughter, Karen, a talented painter and highly successful ceramicist and potter now living in the USA. This is the first public showing of his work in ten years and encompasses work from 1948 to the 1990s. Few examples of his oils can be found – the two examples shown here are not included in the auction.

SUITE OF FOUR
initialled and dated (1991) lower right

22 by 13cm., 8.5 by 5in.

Since the 1980s Alice Maher has been one of the leading contemporary artists in Ireland. Her work is said to offer an alternative to the male-oriented neo-expressionism that has dominated much of Irish art in recent decades. She has consistently challenged Irish Catholic ideas of the feminine, showing her women to be dreaming, thinking beings in mythological landscapes (see Fionna Barber, ‘Familiar: Alice Maher, 1995’, in Fintan Cullen [ed.], Sources in Irish Art: A Reader, Cork University Press, 2,000, pp150-158). Maher studied at UCC in Dublin, 1979-80, then at the Crawford School of Art in Cork. She was an award-winner at the GPA Exhibition of Emerging Artists in 1990. She had a one-person exhibition in Belfast in 1987 and in Limerick in 1989. She now teaches at the Crawford College of Art.
