Camille Souter
Born Betty Pamela Holmes in Northampton, England, Souter grew up in Ireland. She originally trained as a nurse in London, but took up painting having been introduced to it as part of occupational therapy on the Isle of Wight. She also took up sculpture in Dublin under Yann Renard-Goulet as part of the same period of recovery from tuberculosis. Souter married the actor Gordon Souter, who gave her the nickname, "Camille". whytes.ie She took up painting in earnest after a visit to Italy in 1953. Souter exhibited widely in Ireland and Innternationally, with the Irish Exhibition of Living Art from 1953, the Independent Artists from 1960, and with the Oireachtas from 1970, Souter won many awards including the Tony O'Malley award in 1998, and the Irish Museum of Modern Art's Distinguished Career Award in 2000. In 2015, Trinity College Dublin awarded her an honorary doctorate. She was elected a member of Aosdαna in 1981, and elevated to a Saoi in 2008.
