Charles Jervas
Charles Jervas was born in Clonlisk, County Offaly, in 1675. He studied in London under court painter Sir Godfrey Kneller between 1694 and 1695. In 1699 he travelled to Rome where he studied the works of the Old Masters. Jervas found success as a portrait painter when returning to London in 1709 where he succeeded Kneller as Principal Portrait Painter to Kind George I in 1723, a position he retained under King George II. Jervas visited Ireland several times over the course of his career during which he carried out portraits of the country’s intellectuals, among them such personal friends as Jonathan Swift and the poet Thomas Parnell. He remained in London until his death in 1739 after which was held a sale of his works and collection in March 1740.
