Edward Delaney

Edward Delaney was born in Co. Mayo in 1930. One of Ireland’s best-known sculptors, he studied first at the National College of Art and Design before travelling to Germany to study casting. He represented Ireland on an international level at the Biennale de Paris in 1959 and 1961, and at the World Fair in New York in 1965. His works have been exhibited around the world, in New York, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, and Budapest. In Ireland, Delaney exhibited in the Hendriks Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Davis and Solomon Galleries, and in the Project Arts Centre, amongst others. www.whytes.ie He received many awards for his work in sculpture, including the RHA’s Award for Sculpture of Distinction in Bronze in 1991. He was also elected a member of Aosdαna. He spent his later life in Galway, where he died in 2009. Delaney’s work is well-known and can be seen throughout Ireland. Among his best-known sculptures are the statue of Wolfe Tone and famine memorial (1967) at the northeastern corner of St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin and the statue of Thomas Davis in College Green, opposite Trinity College, Dublin. www.whytes.ie
