Estella Frances Solomons

Estella Francis Solomons studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art and the Chelsea School of Art. She studied under Walter Osborne and William Orpen along side Eva Hamilton, William Leech and Mary Swanzy. She was born into a prominent Jewish family in Dublin and was active in the revolutionary movement as a member of Cumann na mBan. Solomons became an associate of the RHA in 1925 and was finally made an honorary member in 1966. She was a prominent printmaker, landscape painter and portraitist. whytes.ie Solomons married the poet Seumus O'Sullivan in 1926 and supported The Dublin Magazine, a literary publication of which he was the editor. As a portrait painter Solomons had notable sitters, including artist Jack Yeats,, poet Austin Clarke, and writers James Stephens and George Russell (AE) as well as the politician Arthur Griffiths. Works of Solomons are held in the Niland Collection, at The Model, Sligo and the National Gallery of Ireland.
