Harry Emerson Lewis
Born in Hutchinson, Kansas on 28 February 1892, Lewis interest in art began at an early age under the guidance of his father Edward Henry Lewis popularly known as Edel in art circles. He attended high school in Michigan and later furthered his art training in Illinois before leaving to serve as an instructor of camouflage in the army in WWI. After the war, Lewis spent three years studying in Florence, Rome, Milan and the Sorbonne in Paris before returning to the United States. Lewis taught in the Art Institute of Chicago for a time before moving to the west coast of America where he spent the rest of his years. He lived in Hollywood for a time then moved to San Francisco in 1931 where he took active part in the art industry. He won several awards at this time including first prize in the Artists Fiesta (Los Angeles) in 1931. He died at his home Santa Ana, California on August 17, 1958. Examples of his work are held in many state and corporate collections including the California Historical Society and the Department of Internal Revenue.
