Born in Kilkenny, Doherty studied architecture at Bolton Street Technical College before travelling to Australia in 1973. He lived in Sydney for five years then moved to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, where he was artist-in-residence at the National College of Art. His first solo exhibition was held in Sydney, at the Coventry Gallery (1977). www.whytes.ie Other notable Australian solo shows have been held at the Rex Irwin Gallery (1978), Robin Gibson Gallery (1992) and the Australian Galleries (2000). During the early eighties he was a frequent exhibitor in group shows at the Taylor Galleries in Dublin; they also gave him his first Irish solo exhibition in 1981, and a further five solo shows with Taylor’s have ensued, most recently in 2003. He divides his time between Ireland and Australia and is represented in prestigious collections in both countries, including the National Gallery of Victoria, AIB, and the Waterford Municipal Gallery, as well as the Institute of Modern Art in Chicago. www.whytes.ie
