Markey Robinson
Artist Markey Robinson (christened David Marcus) was born in Belfast in 1918. The son of a painter/decorator, Markey was mainly self-taught and did not access art school until the late 1930s where he trained briefly at the Belfast School of Art. Like many artists before him, Markey dabbled in different professions before pursuing his creative endeavours. He was a featherweight boxer known as Boyo Marko and also worked as a merchant seaman travelling widely throughout this time. His oeuvre includes paintings from Europe and North America, where he spent time with the Native American community, Asia and Africa. Inspired by the work of French artist Georges-Henri Rouault, Markeys style is similarly characterised by the use of heavy, bold, black outlines within his paintings. Markeys subjects include clowns, still-lives, animals, land and seascapes. He exhibited with the Ulster Academy of Arts and Heals Mansard Gallery in London throughout the 1940s before showing works in the Irish Exhibition of Living Art and the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin in 1977. In 1953 he befriended Oriel Gallery founder Oliver Nulty who championed him and held annual exhibitions of his work from the 1970s and until his death in 1999. Markey designed the stained-glass panels above the door of the Oriel Gallery in 1978; these can still be seen today at their premises in Clare Street, Dublin. His reputation as an artist has grown considerably since his death and his work continues to be highly sought after particularly at auction. Markeys work can be found in numerous private and public collections including the Ulster Museum, Belfast and Queens University Fine Arts Collection in Belfast, among others. (whytes.ie)
