Michael O'Neill
Michael O'Neill has been painting since leaving his teaching post at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin in1995. He has exhibited widely in Northern Ireland with one person exhibitions at the Garret Gallery (1996), Clotworthy Arts Centre (1998), the Engine Room Gallery (1999), 18-22 Hill Street (2004) and the National Buildings in High Street (2005). In that period he also exhibited pieces at the Royal Ulster Academy, the Royal Hibernian Academy, Iontas, the National Small Works Exhibition and the National Portrait Competition in Dublin. In 1999 he produced a one-person show at the National Museum in Gothenberg, Sweden. In December 2006, a very successful exhibition of paintings " Scenes From County Down" took place at the historic Finnebrogue House near Downpatrick, sparking new interest in Michael's art. More recently in January 2007, "Bogland" an exhibition of work inspired by the accalimed filmmaker and raconteur Davy Hammond took place in the Linenhall library and found further audiences for the work of this artist. Michael O'Neill is created four paintings, having been commissioned to commemorate an important era in the history of Belfast. These works were unveiled at the end of 2007.
His work has been well received and widely purchased and paintings are in the possession of many members of the arts and media community including actors Adrian Dunbar, Paul McGann and Suzie Harker, cinematographer Seamus McGarvey, musician Arty McGlynn, TV directors Brendan J Byrne and Brian Henry Martin as well motorcycling legend Robert Dunlop, Northern Ireland international footballer Ian Stewart, All-Ireland winner Ross Carr, and a wide range of other professionals in Ireland and the U.K. His shows invariably attract an eclectic range of people, often new to the art world, and provoke interest, discussion and sales. Michael has experience of the worlds of arts, business and education possessing both Master of Arts and Masters of Science degrees. He and is an award-winning producer of animated films, a working writer and designer as well as a painter and an ex-Ulster rugby player.
