Robert Gregory
Robert Gregory, son of Anglo-Irish politician William Gregory and Lady Gregory, dramatist and co-founder of the Irish Literary Theatre and the Abbey Theatre, was born in London in 1881. He attended Oxford University before studying at the Slade School of Art in London. His mothers passion for theatre and the arts had a great influence on his career, later working as stage and costume designer for plays by William Butler Yeats, J.M Synge and Douglas Hyde. He also worked in Paris in the studio of French portraitist Jacques Emile Blanche. Known for fighting during World War I as a experienced airman, Robert Gregory produced an important range of paintings and illustrations. He died during the war in Italy in 1918. A tribute to Gregory was written by William Butler Yeats who later published a series of poems in his honour.
